I finally dropped my hands from the telescope and stared at the long curtain. It was beige in colour and dropped right to the floor. I went and touched the material. I was soft and I just wanted to wrap myself around it. I looked out the vast window. It was directly viewing the back garden. I looked down to see Clara looking around the pool as if looking for someone. My eyes widened as I realized that maybe she was looking for me.

“I have to go,” I said, turning around.

                “Maisie,” Jack said.

“Maisie,” another voice came. I looked up to the door to see Max. He looked at me almost hurt. His eyes were almost pained as he looked at me.

“Max!” I added. He looked at me and then at Jack.

“I just wanted to tell you that we have to get back now,” Max continued, his eyes staring at Jack.

I picked up my bag and walked over to Max. I turned around to Jack who was looking half surprised and half sad. “Thanks for letting me use the telescope Jack.” With that I gave a smile and turned to leave.

Max was walking fast and headed out the front door like a bullet. As soon as we go out the door he slowed down. I tried to keep pace with him and I pulled his hand. He stopped and turned to look at me almost angrily. My arms instantly dropped to my sides as I saw his face turn from anger to sadness.

“Why…must you be so difficult?” he whispered. I kept silent. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what was wrong with him.

He sighed and continued walking. I hadn’t budged an inch. I looked down to my feet and pouted sadly. “I’m sorry,” I managed.

“See! That’s what’s wrong with you! You apologize! You take things into your arms! When it’s not even your fault! Or even your problem!” he shouted. I jumped slightly from the volume. He brushed a hand through his hair and opened the car door.

I walked silently back to the car and got in.

“Where’s your house?” Max voiced. His tone was a little harsh. I looked at him in shock. Why was he asking me this question? I suddenly notice he was looking in the rear-view mirror.

“Just turn around the corner after you reach that junction,” a voice said. I turned around stunned and saw that Clara was sitting at the back.

“Clara…I…didn’t see you there,” I stuttered.

She smiled sheepishly.  “I’m sorry to be disturbing you.”

“No, not at all!” I chimed.

“Any of you two say that word one more time! I swear!” Max gritted through his teeth. I looked at Max shocked. Had something happened at the party? Why was he so resentful and angry?
