As I awoke in the morning light, I heard my phone buzz with a new text message. I groaned and snatched it off of my bed side table.
'NEW TEXT FROM: PEEKS' my phone read. I couldn't help but smile inside. But then my conversation with Jonathan came flooding back to me. I couldn't do this. I couldn't be with him.
As I typed in my passcode '1988', I pondered what I would say to him.
His message read:
"Good morning beautiful. (:"
My fingers hovered over the keypad for a while. What was I supposed to say?
"Hi." Was all I responded with.
Almost instantly, he replied with, "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, fine."
"Dani."
"Patrick."
And then my phone started playing my ringtone 'Chelsea Dagger', signaling I was getting a call. I clicked the green answer button.
"Hello?"
"Hi Dani." Was the response from the one and only Patrick Kane.
"Hey Pat."
"Do you want to do something today?" He asked.
"I'm uh busy." Hopefully he couldn't tell I was lying.
"Doubt it." He said. I could almost see him smirking.
"Okay fine your right I'm not busy."
"So why won't you?" He asked.
"Don't you get it? This can't work. WE can't work Patrick." I replied.
"I, I don't get it." He responded. I could hear his voice crack a bit.
I sighed.
"Pat, we just can't. Jonny doesn't want me to have anything to do with you."
"Oh. I see. I'll just go then. Bye." He said suddenly, and then the line went dead.
Jonathan Toews, I hope your happy.
I walked out of my bedroom and into the kitchen where Jon was cooking eggs.
"Morning lil sis." Jonathan said while cooking, not looking up. I didn't bother answering, just went straight past the kitchen and into the bathroom. After shutting the door, I took a steamy shower, hoping it would clear my head. But of course, one blue-eyed boy was still in my thoughts.
I decided to go to the United Center and skate around, for something to do. So after throwing on some jeans and a blackhawks t-shirt, I grabbed my skates and hopped into the car.
After arriving, I went straight into the tunnel and started to lace up my skates. And then, I hit the ice.
Now I was never a hockey player. Left that all to my brother. But the feeling of hitting ice, is unexplainable. It's like nothing else in the world matters. I skated for what felt like no time at all, before I heard someone clapping.
I looked around until I spotted a boy in the benches. And of course, that boy was the one and only Patrick Kane.
"Pat, what are you doing here?" How long have you been watching me?" I was embarassed. I hated when people watched me skate.
"About half an hour." He responded, smirking.
Half an hour? I'd been on the ice 10 minutes, tops. Or had I? I wasn't sure how much time had passed. That's what hockey does to you. It stops time.
I skated up to the bench and sat next to him. We sat there for a while, in silence. Until he broke the ice.
"Dani, you can't do anything to stop me from liking you. Not you, not Jonny, not anyone." He said.
"But my brother-" I started.
"Do you do everything your brother tells you too?" He asks me, looking into my eyes.
"Well, no.." I said.
"Then why this?"
"God damn it Patrick you make this so hard. Everyone knows your past! I don't want to be another one of your one night stands. Your fuck-buddy that you go to everytime your drunk! I just, can't." I said, looking away. I promised myself I wouldn't cry. Not here. Not in front of him.
"My past? THAT'S what you're worried about?"
"Yes.."
"Well I can't help what happened then okay? It's the past for a reason. I know I got drunk alot. I know I brought girls back alot. But i also know that I care alot about you, okay? It's not like that." He said, softly grabbing my chin and turning it towards him.
"I can't not be with you." He said again, quieter. I couldn't take it. I pressed my lips to his and sparks flew. I smiled in the kiss and ran my fingers threw his hair. I wanted this to last forever. But then my phone rang.
"Hello?" I answered. I didn't recognize the number.
"Hi, is this Ms. Danielle Toews?"
"Yes, this is she. Who is this?" I asked, looking at Patrick.
"This is Mary, and I'm calling to report that Jonathan Toews, your.. brother, has been taken into care here in the hospital. He was in a house fire, and luckily the smoke alarms worked and fire fighters were able to rescue him before anything, well.. bad, happened. He is unconscious right now."
I dropped the phone.
"Pat, I- I have to go." I said urgently, grabbing my phone and running off the ice and out the United Center and out to my car.
None of this would've happened if I wasn't out, with none other than Patrick Kane.
