It was weeks until the McCays heard from kaiba again. He wanted to arrange a date he could marry Evelyn to get things over and done with. To make things worse, the day which kaiba was suppose to be visiting to confirm the date Mr McCay was rushed into hospital for heart failure. When he received the news he wasn't entirely sure what he was suppose to so. Should he go and visit? Or wait to receive some sort of message from him? He decided on taking it upon his own shoulders and visit mr McCay. As soon as he stepped into the room he felt dread in the pit of his stomach. Mr McCay looked as though he had only a few hours left on his clock. In the corner of the room was Evelyn, asleep in a chair next to her father's bed.
"Ah...seto" Mr McCabe's voice was slow, raspy and quiet. Kaiba stood there, unsure of what to say. "I've signed Evelyn's contract, so the deed is done. As soon as you marry Evelyn the company is yours to do what you want with it" he promised and kaiba nodded. "I don't think I'll make it through the night Mr Kaiba" McCabe said and kaiba was surprised at his sudden formality. "Please, look after her Mr Kaiba" Mr McCabe looked at his sleeping daughter. "She's more alike to you then you may think"
Kaiba rolled his eyes but did not make a sound. "I realise that asking you to love her is a lot. But please at least see to it she is in no pain. That she's never hungry and has a warm bed" Mr McCabe begged, outstretching his shaking hand. Kaiba took it in a firm handshake before nodding once, unsure of what to say.
"Goodnight" kaiba said shortly and left the room, his palms shaking and sweating.
He did not get any sleep that night. Every few minutes he was wondering if Mr McCabe was still alive, if Evelyn had woken up. He saw no sense in just lying in bed so got out his laptop and began to work on a few upcoming projects. At three AM he received an e-mail from the McCay company saying Mr McCay had died. It wasn't that he was glad the man had died, no one was that cruel, but he wanted to get this whole marriage thing over and done with sooner then later. He picked up the contract that lay on his desk and scanned the terms of the agreement silently. It said Evelyn now had to move into the kaiba mansion and the McCay property was to be sold under her name.
He got up from his chair and went downstairs to make himself some coffee. As he passed Mokuba's room he peeped in to see his younger brother fast asleep, the TV still on quietly. He crept in silently and switched off the TV and smiled at his brother before shutting the door behind himself. He was certain that the only person he would love would be Mokuba.
The next day he pulled the limo up to the McCay property and a maid let him in, a sad expression on her face.
"I will get miss McCay now for your sir" she bowed and left kaiba alone in the empty foyer. The furniture had been either covered with white sheets or completely taken away. It all felt like it was going so fast but kaiba couldn't wait till it was over and done with.
"I guess I'll be moving into the Kaiba Mansion then?" There was that same female, slightly nasally voice. Kaiba turned around to see Evelyn, though she looked more tiered, paler and her eyes were red (no doubt from crying). He knew what it felt like to lose both parents but as he looked into her emerald eyes he could not find the words to apologise or offer his sympathy. He could only nod at his fiancé.
"I'll have somebody come round to pick your things up later but I wouldn't get too comfortable at my mansion" kaiba added as he turned around. Evie followed him out of the house in her wheelchair until she stopped at the limo and looked a little worried.
"Roland help McCay with her wheelchair" he looked got into the limousine himself and waited for Evelyn to be assisted. He was surprised by how long it indeed took her to get into the limo and how tired she looked afterwards. She yawned as she strapped herself in and they pulled away from her old home.
"I hear you have a brother?" Evelyn asked, trying to break the silence but kaiba continued to look out of the window, ignoring her. He looked subtly down at her legs to see a small bag with a clear pipe attached to it. That pipe lead up from the bag and hooked round her ears to her nose and made small pressurised noises whenever she breathed in.
'Great, I'm marrying darth vader' he thought to himself. He began to wonder how Mokuba would react to Evelyn's arrival. He had told him that morning that she was coming to stay and that her father had passed away the night before. He had been sad but also excited that for the first time ever his brother was brining home a girl. Now it was only a matter of time before the media heard and the news of his engagement was all over the headlines.
"I want to keep this thing quite. Not a word to any newspaper or magazine, got it?" Snapped kaiba to his new fiancé. Evie looked at him unbelievably. Was she really marrying this wretched man?! Had her father made some sort of mistake? The thought of her father made her throat swell.
"Yeah" she chocked out and wiped a rebellious tear away with her sleeve. "I understand" she nodded although he wasn't even looking at her.
Soon the limo stopped and a large pair of gates opened to a long sandy driveway that lead to an impressive manor.
'My house must have looked like a cardboard box in his eyes' Evie though before the car stopped and two men in suits opened the doors. Kaiba just got out without a word whereas Evie politely asked for help as her wheel chair was in the boot of the limousine.
"Thank you" Evie thanked the suited man after he helped her up the steps to the front door. He then nodded at her before saying "will you require any more assistance miss?"
"No, I think I can take it from here thanks, but I'll say something if I do. Thanks again" Evie always felt a little silly wheeling herself around in the chair but until she had fully regained her strength it was her only way of getting around. She was glad to see that she wasn't that far behind Kaiba but she soon saw a face she did not recognise. A young boy with the grooviest black hair Evie had ever seen stood on the stairs, looking curiously at her.
"Mokuba, this is Evelyn" Kaiba addressed his brother.
"Hi" mokuba's smile was the cheeriest thing she had seen all day and instantly she felt it had given her mood a slight boost.
"It's nice to meet you" Evie outstretched her hand and Mokuba came down the stairs and took it.
"You two" he nodded, still smiling. He seemed completely unfazed by the cannula and wheelchair. "So you're the girl my brother talked about?" He questioned and Evie looked slightly surprised.
"Yeah I guess" she nodded.
"Cool, so when's the big day?" He asked. Evie was beginning to think Mokuba had been born with all the happy genes that Kaiba didn't posses.
"Umm....I'm not sure actually" she shrugged lightly. Ideally she didn't want to marry the man at all. He was rude and obnoxious. She just wanted to get the wedding and her father's funeral out of the way.
"Oh"
A deep silence hung over the room until Kaiba spoke. "Your room'll be down here, someone will show you later. Your things will be dropped off later, dinner is at six thirty" he said in an assertive manor before climbing the stairs
"Is he always so moody?" Evie asked quietly once she was sure kaiba was out of earshot.
"Kinda. He's just worse around people" Mokuba explained. "So how did you and him meet?" She asked, ready to hear a gooey story, though he couldn't see much love between the two. In fact he couldn't see any.
"Uhm. Actually it's all a bit complicated. My father promised kaiba the McCay company if he married me and agreed to look after me whilst I recover"
"What happened?" Mokuba asked, finally taking notice of the nasal tubes.
"I've been I'll since I was a baby. I developed lung problems which made me weak. Then I caught a virus a few years back. This is the first time I've been out of the hospital since I was threw" she admitted.
"Wow" Mokuba looked at Evie with admiration.
"But I'm on the road to recovery" she smiled in assurance and Mokuba also smiled.
"Come on, I'll show you around" he promised and began to lead the way. The mansion was like a maze in Evie's eyes and she was unsure how she was going to remember where everything was. Mokuba showed her the downstairs bathroom, the kitchen, the living room, entertainment room (which had the biggest TV Evie had ever seen in a house along with all the consoles you would wish for), the kitchen and the few spare rooms
"You guess you can pick whichever room you'd like cause they never get used" Mokuba pointed out cheerily as they finished their tour.
"Thanks for showing me around Mokuba. So what do you like to do for fun?" She asked and Mokuba Beamed.
"Well I usually study on weekdays but when I get spare time I like to play video games. Oh and I'm learning to play duel monsters!" He exclaimed happily but Evie looked at him blankly. "You don't know what duel monsters is?!" He exclaimed and Evie shook her head. Could he blame her though? She had sent most of her life in the same hospital room. He ran off, leaving her alone for a few moments before returning, a stack of brown cards in his hands.
"Here" he took one off the top of the stack and handed it to her. "Be careful with them, they're my brothers" Mokuba warned as she looked at the card in her hands.
"Blue-eyes white dragon" she read the name aloud and Mokuba nodded.
"It's my brothers favourite card" he explained.
"The artwork is beautiful" she admired the delicate blues on the dragon. This took Mokuba by surprise. Most people commented on how cool or scary it looked, or even how powerful it was. But Evie saw beauty in it.
"My brothers company pretty much revolves around these things" he explained further as she shuffled through the deck.
"Wow, this ones beautiful" she smiled as she looked at the card known as 'soul release'. "What's your favourite card Mokuba?" She asked as she placed the card back onto the stack.
"Probably the blue eyes, like my brother"
"Huh" Evie looked thoughtfully at the cards before speaking again. "It must be quite hard being kaiba's brother. You've got all those expectations bearing down on you and I bet you don't get a quite moment from the media" she handed the cards back and Mokuba looked shocked. Most people would only comment on how cool it must be to be kaiba's brother but Evie saw past all that, again.
"I guess I'll go and pick a room. I'll see you around Mokuba. Thanks for the tour" Evie smiled back at Mokuba and wheeled herself out of the room leaving Mokuba alone, a small glowing feeling in his chest.
