The next day Kaiba worked at home again but he felt like there was something bugging him. Like something on his conscious. He had been up all night thinking about Evie and that scream. Would he have to put up with that scream if he married her. Hell it wasn't even marriage! It was a contract that, really, none of them wanted to be tied into. He was free until Evelyn's father died. He glared at his copy of the contract that rested on the polished wood of his desk, taunting him. He picked it up for the third time that morning and read over it carefully until his phone rang. He picked up the phone angrily.
"What?" He snapped.
"Kaiba my boy! I'm sorry if I'm interrupting anything, just though I'd call and let you know you are welcome to come round and visit Evelyn today-"
"I'm busy" he butted in and put the phone down. He paced a few times before glaring at the phone again. He was almost tempted to ring back and agree, just to see what Evelyn was really like. Damn. He sat back down and tried his best to concentrate on getting urgent designs done until he felt he could no longer function without another coffee. He was beginning to think he wouldn't even make it into his courtiers with the amount of caffeine he consumed daily. He looked out at the bleak autumn morning as he sipped his coffee and tried to stay awake. Sleep had become his enemy lately with awful nightmares that made him wake in the night in a cold sweat. He took one last look outside before retreating back into his office for the day...

It was a few days later which Kaiba received another phone call, an invitation from Mr McCay to come round and visit Evie. He agreed but this time decided not to wear his trade mark white coat but a pair of dark trousers and black button up shirt. He was driven to the puny home of the McCay's and decided to let himself in.
"Kaiba my boy!" Called Mr McCay as he descended down the stairs. 'I wish he would stop calling me that' Kaiba thought as Mr McCay smiled at him. "Evie will be down shortly, come join me in the living room" Kaiba wordlessly followed McCay to the small living room where a welcoming fire was burning in the fireplace.
"Scotch?" Asked McCay but Kaiba shook his head, it was a little early for drinking... "Sit my lad, sit" he gestured to the chair behind Kaiba and Kaiba sat, crossing his arms.
"How's your brother-"
"Let's quit the small talk. You and I both know the only reason I came here was to see if I could put up with Evelyn" kaiba smirked when he saw McCay bite his lip to stop the lecture about respect tumbling out. Suddenly there was a knock on the door and Evelyn was wheeled in by a slightly older women who Kaiba guessed was a maid.
"Thank you evangeline, I'm sorry for the trouble" Evelyn smiled at the women helping her in and the maid shook her head.
"Not at all sweetie, just call if you need anything" she smiled and shut the door. It was then that Evelyn looked at kaiba and for the first time he could see the colour of her eyes. The bright emeralds that matched her volumous red hair perfectly.
"You must be seto kaiba" she had a smile that seemed to travel into her voice, even though the oxygen cannula gave her voice a slightly nasally sound to it. Kaiba could only nod, a small frown stuck on his face.
"And you're Evelyn" it was more of a statement then a polite question. Evelyn nodded this time.
"I-" Evelyn was caught off by a few coughs which made her eyes water.
"Evelyn? Sweetheart are you okay?" Asked McCay, beginning to stand to assist his daughter but Evelyn raised her hand to stop him.
"I'm fine dad" she assured between coughs. So far kaiba was not impressed. "Excuse me" she apologised clearing her throat and addressing kaiba once more."I wanted to apologise for yesterday. We didn't really get a chance to talk"
"I didn't see it as a big miss" kaiba stated plainly he knew he was being rude but didn't give a damn.
"That's good" Evelyn said level-headedly. "I hear you have a younger brother-"
"Look, between you and your old man you seemed to have mastered the useless art of pathetic small talk but that's not why I came here. I'm guessing you know about the contract?" Snapped kaiba. Evelyn nodded without a word. "Good. That's the only reason I came here. If you don't mind I have a company to run, I don't have time for pleasantries" with that kaiba stood and left before anyone could say another word...
"Well" Evie said once kaiba was gone. "He was certainty....interesting"
"I'm sorry Evie" apologised her father "he's not much of a charmer but he'll provide a good home for you when I'm gone, that much I can promise" McCay tried to smile at his daughter but he was tired. Too tired. He was unsure how long he had left with his daughter but by the way he was feeling lately he was afraid it wouldn't be long. "I've seen him with his brother. He would do anything for those close to him, I think he just puts up a wall to stop him from being hurt" explained McCay.
"He sounds lonely" Evie sighed, looking out the door he had just left through.
"I think he is my dear, I think he is...."
