The Week After

It was your second week at school, so you weren't feeling too bad about your standing. Lindsey didn't need to walk you to your classes anymore though she often did. Your friendship started off strong and it was only getting stronger.

You still ate lunch on the quad with everyone and silently wondered if they had another secret spot they ate at when it got too cold. January in Jersy was no joke, only an idiot would eat outside.

You luckily had gym with both Gerard and Lindsey, you got the vibe that come prom season, they both would have a date.

Less luckily, Ray was nowhere to be seen in any of your classes. Lunch was the only time you got to see him and even then you were too chicken shit most of the time to talk to him. You hoped you weren't hurting his feelings by inadvertently ignoring him. It's just that every time you thought of something you would say to him the topic changed.

Once or twice you'd caught him leaving or going to the music room after school, but it was like something was keeping you two apart on purpose.

Then on Friday, you got a call from an unknown number.

"Hello?" You answered.

"Hey, Y/N?" The voice on the other end said.

"Yeah, that's me."

"Hi! It's Ray."

Your heart skipped a beat "Hey Ray, what's up?"

"So," He said, "Some of us are going to the mall tomorrow, do you want to come?"

"I'd love to." You answered, "But who is 'some of us'?"

"Just me, Gerard, and Lindsey." He said.

You bit your tongue, but something told you Lin had set this all up as a sort of double date. Or some weird ploy to get you and Ray alone together. She wasn't blind, of course, she'd seen you sneaking glances at him.

"Sounds great." You said, "What time?"

"Like 1?" Ray said. There was a brief pause before he spoke again "Can I come to get you?"

You blushed and tried not to stammer over your words "Um, sure, that'd be cool."

You gave him your address, said goodbye, and hung up.

A million thoughts ran through your head but the number one was that you had absolutely nothing to wear. You didn't want to wear your usual school clothes. Would a dress be too fancy for a trip to the mall? You consolidated your thoughts as you mentally and near physically tore apart your closet.

Rays POV:

I snapped my phone shut and looked up "Happy now?"

My close friend (and Gerard's brother), Mikey leaned back in his chair and clasped his hands behind his head "Very."

Mikey was one of my closest friends and the pushiest. I mentioned one time that I thought Y/N was cute and now he's having me pretty much ask her out. I was sweating bullets the whole time, it's a miracle that I didn't faint on the phone. I don't think I'd ever been so nervous about a phone call.

"Ok," He says "Walk me through your plan."

"What plan?" I ask.

"What are you going to do once you get to the mall? Man, you're clueless."

"I don't know!" I exclaim "Walk around? Get a coffee? Something normal."

"Wow."

"Wow what?"

"'Something normal'?" He questions sarcastically.

"Jesus, maybe we'll see a movie," I said and turned in my office chair.

"That's actually pretty good," Mikey said after thinking for a moment.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. See if there's something scary playing, maybe she'll hold onto you or some other chick flick thing." He says and shrugs his shoulders slightly.

"What's even playing?"

"There's a new one. "American Psycho" or something."

"And that's going to be scary?" I ask. I feel like a little kid worried that a movie will be too violent.

"Dude, I've never seen it! I hear it's supposed to be good."

"Hm..." I hum to myself, thinking. "I guess we'll see."

"Haha, Yes!" Mikey says and punches the air slightly "Ray's finally getting some action."

I groan and cover my now red face "I'm not 'getting some action'."

"Sure you are!" He says teasingly "It only took you three years."

"Ok, time for you to go home," I say and get up from my seat.

"What, no." He whines.

"Yes," I say, repeating his tone mockingly.

After much bargaining and a soda, Mikey finally leaves my apartment. No doubt to go bother Gerard and Lindsey about tomorrow. I sincerely doubt that he ran his master plan by them before telling me about it.

He'd never even met Y/N, how could he be so sure this would do anything? It's not like it worked for him either.

I scoff and head back to my room, swimming in my own thoughts as I allow myself to daydream just a little but about the coming afternoon.
