So I know I didn't say who was behind them at the end of chapter 3 and just started off with a new idea in chapter 4. But I did so for some reasons that will be discovered in future chapters. Also, I really want to continue with the story so there are some typos here and there because I don't get the time to review them. So sorry about that. You can probably figure that one out. On with the story!
"X=10?" Jack guessed for the nth time. I refrained from slamming my head on the desk. "If 2x+5=30 then what is the value of x? What's the first step?" I ask starting all over again. I can practically see the gears turning in his head and the smoke coming out of his ears as he stares at the question. "Uh..." he starts. I slap my forehead. "You need major help. This is basic ninth grade material! Not even, an eighth grader could tell me this! You have to isolate x. How do you do that?" I ask slowly handing him the pencil.
"You subtract five on each side?" I stand up abruptly and raise my hands in the air staring at the sky. "Thank the lord that you know something! I am the best tutor ever!!!" I cried. Jack pumped his fist in the air. "So I'm right?" I nodded, sitting back down. "So that means 2x=25." he clarified and I nodded, unable to help smiling. Maybe he wasn't so hopeless...
"Now I isolate x by dividing two on each side but wait..." he pauses. "25 doesn't go into two! Therefore there is no solution." he stated proudly. My smile fell like a rock as I stared at him dumbfounded. "Oh my god. 25 is divisible by two. 25 divided by two is 12.5. You have to count the decimals?" He looks back at the problem tapping his chin thoughtfully.
"No. I don't think so. I think my answer is right." he says nodding his head. "Yeah well I'm the tutor. The answer is 12.5." It takes a good two hours before we move on to the last problem I had prepared for the day. "What is the quadratic formula. The one wherex= -b plus or negative the square root of b squared minus 4ac over 2a."
I stare at him leaving a few seconds open for suspense and start clapping. "Congratulations Jack! You know more math then you did yesterday!" He cheers waving his paper and pencil in the air. "I would like to thank my parents and my friends and of course my tutor Diana Willow Green!" As he continues his very unnecessary speech, I feel my phone buzz and check the caller ID.
Jack's voice has faded out behind me as I smile at the text.
Dominic- hey, wanna hang out at the park?
Diana- sure, what's the occasion?
Dominic- I can't take you on a date?
Diana- Of course you can. What time?
Dominic- Right now.
Diana- Right now?
I could feel Jack's presence behind me as he peered over my shoulder. "You know it's rude to read someone else's texts, especially when they do not concern you." I turn around to see Jack's eyes turn a darker shade of brown. "You're not going, are you?" I raise an eyebrow. "Why not? What do you have against it?" Instead of answering, he rips the phone out of my hand and dashes off.
"HEY! GIVE ME MY PHONE BACK!" I scream, chasing after him. I see him typing away on my phone. "Sorry, I can't. Tutoring Jack." he presses send and turns back, smirking at me. "What was that about? We're done with the tutoring session." Jack turns back to the phone as it buzzes again.
"Oh look at that Diana! Dominic texted 'Are you free later?' I think I should tell him that he should go get a life instead of being around you all the time, what do you think?"
"Jack." I say with a note of warning in my voice. "Give it back." Jack pauses, his fingers hovering over the screen. "Please." I hold out my hand for the phone. He looks from me back to the screen and reluctantly sighs in defeat handing it back to me.
"Why don't you just go home and lie down? Hang out with Rachel?" I suggest. Jack narrows his eyes at me. "I thought you hated her." I sent the text to Dominic saying I'll be right there and apologizing for Jack's behavior. "I do. But she seems to make you happy, tone down your temper. Go do something with her."
Jack gathers his things wordlessly, stuffing his backpack with sudden anger. I thought he liked Rachel? Otherwise, why date her? "Please don't go with Dominic." he begged. I looked down at the floor, flicking my eyes up to him every now and then. "Jack, please just go."
Jack sighs once more leaving my room. I decide to get ready looking down at my attire. I switched my 'Die fighting!' T-shirt with a gold sleevless top doing a final check in my full-length mirror before gathering my things and meeting Dominic who was already at my doorstep.
"Hey Dina." he said, trying out my nickname. I smiled at him kissing him on the cheek as we walked hand in hand to the park. "So how did the tutoring session go?" he asks a sudden bitterness filling his tone. "Turns out, Jack isn't hopeless at math." I then notice a bruise forming under his left eye. "Oh my god, what happened?" I ask, concern filling my tone.
"Don't worry about it." He gave me a light smile. But how could I not? "At least tell me who did it." Dominic sighed. "It was... Jack." At the mention of his name, a sudden churning fills my stomach. What made him punch him? What gave him the right to do that? The only thing I was sure of...he was so dead.
And that does it for this for this chapter! Stick around for the next one!
