Morant: Back to the basics

Tuesday afternoon

My favorite period of the day. Lunch. I went to my usual off campus spot and got me a chicken finger plate. When I got back to campus I met up with Kelly, Stephanie and my older brother Chris in the cafeteria. "Hey, Stephanie"

"Oh, hey Temetrius"

"I don't know what you did but Kara is in red form today" Chris said

"She was mad because I was talking to Lauren"

"I mean I'd be mad to if my girlfriend was talking to a guy that she has crush on" Kelly chimed in

"What?! You like my sister?"

"As a friend but—

"This nigga lying. Temetrius been on this girl since the first day of junior year but because of Kara and her minions he never said anything"

"Ok, maybe I was feeling her junior year but I have Kara and I'm happy" I shrugged

"Yeah, you seem so in love when's the wedding?" Steph said making Kelly and Chris laugh

Speaking of Lauren I looked up and there she was walking into the cafeteria with her gym clothes on looking thick as hell in them shorts.

"Call Lauren over here steph, she should sit with us"

"Oh but you don't have a crush on her?" Kelly said

Steph signaled Lauren to come over and sit with us. I cleared a spot right next to me and watched my bros laugh. "Hey guys"

"Hey, I'm Chris, Temetrius older brother"

"Lauren" they shook hands

"So Lauren about that number... can I get it?"

"Is that a good idea?"

"Please cause I don't like his girlfriend" Kelly said under his breath and the table laughed

"Just keep me out of your wifey troubles"

"Wifey? I haven't found one of those... yet" Temetrius said

Lauren wrote her number down and I put it in my pocket. "She has a phone in her room so you guys can talk all night" Stephanie added

"Will you hush" Lauren laughed a bit

We sat there eating until the bell for next period rang. I was happy because my next class was art class with Lauren.

"If you don't mind, Laur, can I walk you to class?"

"Aren't you in my class, silly?"

"Oop"Kelly joked

"So that means you should say "yes"

Lauren didn't reply she just stood up and grabbed her cheer bag and book bag. "I can carry something for you"

"Oh, I got it. Thank you though Temetrius" Lauren smiled shyly

It was too cute. The way she smiled and how she said my name. We said our goodbyes to our friends and headed to the next class.

"You sure you not gonna get in trouble for walking me to... I mean walking with me to our class?"

"I'm sure shawty."

"Do you even like Kara?" When Lauren asked that question it caught me off guard. I guess she noticed because she started apologizing and telling me she didn't mean to say that out loud.

"You good, Lil mama. I just don't feel her the same way I used to"

"I wonder who made you— I mean what made you change how you feel about her"

Thank God by time she finished her sentence we were in front of the classroom door. I definitely would be calling her later on tonight to finish the conversation though.

I had just got home from cheer practice and I was sitting at the kitchen table doing homework. Stephanie was at volleyball practice, my aunt was out working so it was just dad and I.

"Hey lady bug"

"What's up pop"

"How does baked chicken, broccoli and mashed potatoes sound for dinner?"

"Great. Dad can I ask you something?"

"Sure" he said and took the chicken out the freezer

"Well, how did you know you had a crush on mom? You guys met at Crestwood right?"

"We did. And I knew I had a crush on your mother when every chance I get I tried to talk to her, I called her for help with homework I didn't plan on doing" he laughed a bit

"But weren't you with Ms.Jones from church or something?"

"See, baby, over the summer things were fine between Tonya and I but once the new school year started and I seen your mother and we started talking as friend I realized I only wanted tonya because I thought that was who I was supposed to be with. I was on the football team and she was head cheerleader. People wake up with different feelings everyday and at that age it's ok"

"Thanks dad. I'm gonna go in my room and finish my homework"

"Ok doll, I'll call you when dinner is ready"
