A New Beginning
The emergency room was on the quieter side for a Manhattan night, with only 10 ambulances in the first three hours of her shift, she saw three of them personally and two others on top of that, slowly. She was putting the last of the stitches on a little boy who fell off his bed trying to touch the ceiling fan, he did, but then needed the stitches.
"What a brave little guy you are, not one tear." She said.
The mother looked at the boy and in a very thick New York accent said, "It's not like it's the first time he's been stitched up. I swear he gets one set taken out and then gets hurt and we are right back here getting another set."
Her curiosity peaked, "What happened last time?"
With the biggest smile on his face, the boy said, "I made a bike ramp with my friend and we were going to try to see who could jump the farthest. The ramp broke and I flipped over my handlebars and cut my back." He lifted his shirt to show her the scar from the cut.
"Sounds like you have some big adventures coming up in your life." She said, "Try to at least let this cut heal before the next one."
"No promises, I got big ideas." He says.
His mother gives him a stern look, "We promise to try, this child will be the death of me." They all laugh.
"The nurse will come in with the discharge papers and documents on how to take care of the stitches. Remember to keep them covered and dry and I'll see you in two weeks to take them out at my office or you can set something up with your primary care provider." She said before leaving.
The mother thanked her as she left and the boy waved. She had a sudden feeling of DeJavu seeing the mother with a much larger boy laying on the bed holding her hand begging for the pain to stop. His foot was twisted around in an unnatural state. Then as soon as the image appeared it disappeared. Every once in a great while she would get these feelings that something bad was about to happen, her gut was telling her something important but never an image.
Sirens screamed from the sliding glass doors, it was her turn. She jogged outside to meet the E.M.T.'s unloading a man, there was blood everywhere. It was not a time to panic so she did her job and started asking questions.
"Fill me in Jake." She said.
"Male, age unknown, was found in an alley unconscious, no one around. I don't think the blood is all his but there were no other victims at the site. He has come around a couple of times each time he asked for Penelope and Cain." Jake stated the facts.
"Let's get some o neg down here looks like he's lost a lot of blood. We need to see if anything important has been punctured, and get him to a bed. Hopefully, these other people come in and let us know what happened. Get me an IV started for the blood, it's not slowing down yet."
The nurses hurried off to get the needed items. She looked into his eyes, pupils were dilating correctly, moving limbs, nothing seemed broken, and odd bruises were all over him. She hadn't seen this kind of trauma since she helped her father at the gym after his fighter had a match. He has been in a bad fight, a fight for his life. One of the EMTs came in for a signature to turn over the patient to the hospital.
"Where is the other guy?" She asked
Jake looked confused, "There was no other guy, just him. Why, what's up Doc?"
"The injuries are consistent with the ones I would see when working with my father in his gym after a fight. There is another person out there just as hurt as this guy or worse." She said.
