One month later
"Happy Birthday Sweetheart!" Pop said, giving her a hug.
Maya breathed in his after shave, "Thanks Pop."
"Yes happy birthday baby. I can't believe you are 23 already. Where has the time gone?" Her mom said, wiping away a tear. "What are your plans for tonight?"
Maya took a bit of the cake sitting in front of her, "Nothing big, I'm meeting up with the guys from work. I think we'll go to a club or two, make bad decisions, drink too much and regret it all in the morning."
"Ah to be young again." Pop laughed.
The birthday celebration with Mom and Pop was a tradition that Maya would not miss for the life of her. Dinner of her choosing and then a cake that Pop baked and decorated all on his own. In the early years they were simple one color nothing much to them, he won't admit how much he likes decorating cakes, but they have only gotten better over the years. This year's cake looked like some kind of dragon, she figured it was some kind of Game of Thrones deal. He really out did himself with the chocolate filling in the middle of the layers.
"Maya we need to have a conversation now that you're 23." Her mom tried to get her to listen.
"Mom I think you are a little late for any kind of conversation. Plus we had them all, sex, college, finance, relationships, what eles is there?" Maya said.
Her mom's body went stiff, "You're father."
Now that was not what Maya would have guessed, "I'm done talking about the man who abandoned me. He doesn't want me, I got it, I don't want him."
"Maya don't say that. There are things you don't know, things you need to know. Reasons why he is not here." She tried to explain.
Maya ate her last bit of cake before standing up, "Mom I'm not having this conversation right now. I'm meeting up with my friends so I need to get going. Thanks for the dinner and cake Pop it was wonderful like always." She kissed them both before leaving to drive back to the city. Maya met up with Jon, Sam, Mark, Scott, and Julie at the boys apartment after she changed into her night clothes. Tonight's attire is a silver skin tight mini dress, black cheap heels, because everyone knows they will get runeind by the end of the night, and her perfect little black clutch that holds her phone, ID, and a pair of ballet slippers for the walk home. Before she was able to knock on the Juile opened it.
"Happy Birthday!" She screamed, putting a glass of champagne in her hand.
Maya took a drink, "Aww thank you." She hugged Julie, then Mark who was standing behind her.
"Okay we'll finish this bottle, which has one glass left. Maya hurry up, you're behind already. Then we'll go Apex, Kimmy has a gig there tonight. She insisted on taking you there tonight." Mark said.
Sam filled Maya's glass up before saying a toast, "Here is to the newest member of the best misfits. Happy Birthday Maya!"
"Aw I'm part of the group now! Wait, I wasn't parted before?" She asked jokingly.
Jon laughed, "You were on a trial period."
They all laughed finishing off the last of the champagne and phones started going off. Julie started ushering everyone out the door, "The Uber is here, let's go!"
The uber black was sitting in the street waiting for them to get in, a white Cadilac Denialie, enough room for all of them. Inside they handed out the complementary water, Maya drank as much as she could because she knew very well it would be the last bit of non alcoholic drink she would have all night. Music was playing and she didn't have a worry in the world at that moment, life was good.
