Ten years later
"Doctor McIvory, we need you to come in and pick up Maya. Um there seems to have been an altercation in the girls restroom. I don't know but, you are a doctor, you can make that call." The receptionist said over the phone.
This was just one of the situations Maya had been dealing with over the years. Girls can be so cruel, this time insead of the same calling it was a beating. She didn't know what to do so she just covered up her head so it didn't hurt too much. The girls would get away with it like they always do, their fathers were around and would pay the school off to have this swept under the rug.
Their mothers' didn't work so they were picked up by the time Maya's mother arrived. It was as bad as she thought it would be. Maya had never seen her mother more angry, there were even cuss words flying out of her mouth. Lawsuits were threatened, please ma'am we will handle this internally were said and like always Maya left the school feeling less same than ever. What is she going to do now?
"We have had enough of this. If the school is not going to protect you from bullies it looks like we are going to have to do it ourselves." Her mother said in the car on the way to Pop's.
"What?" Her small voice was defeated.
In the parking lot Sarah turned toward her daughter, "Maya my sweet little girl you are stronger than you know. You come from generations of fighters from both sides of your family and it's time you become one yourself."
"At Pop's gym. But you said I wasn't allowed to train with Pop." Maya was confused.
Sarah looked out the car window, "I know what I said but this needs to happen. I will not let you be the victim again."
They walked into the gym that has been Maya's second home for years. The smell of men's body odor always takes some getting used to before your nose gets acquainted to the stench. Pop was by the side of a caged octagon ring yelling at some kid not protecting his face. Even Maya knew to protect the face.
A big smile came on Pop's face when he saw her, then it turned to a frown when he saw the black eye forming around Maya's eye, "My poor Goddess what happened?"
Sarah spoke before Maya could. It was a good thing because the tears were about to escape, "Those girls took it too far, beat her up in the bathroom. Enough is enough Pop it's time for you to teach her."
"But I thought you agreed to keep her undetected." Pop said.
"That was then, before this, I'll call him, give him a heads up, but she needs to be taught to at least protect herself." She said.
Maya had no idea who the he was they were talking about or why she would need to be undetectable. Maybe her dad was a bad man. She always imagined he would be one of the good guys like mom always said. He would find her after all these years tell her he would never leave again and they could be a family again. Then he would pick her up from school and all those mean girls would finally see he did love her and she was wanted. But the older she got the more she came to understand it would always only be a dream.
"Well Maya looks like you will be starting Muay Thai today. You'll be in Ralphy's class. Go get dressed, it starts in fifteen minutes." Pop said kissing her on the top of her head.
On her way to the girls locker room Maya passed the office where her mother, Sarah, went to make a phone call. She was just short enough where she couldn't be seen out the office window but could hear everything. Her mother sounded upset, mad even.
"I don't care what we agreed to, this changes everything. She needs to learn Cedric." She paused for the person on the other side of the phone call. "No," her voice cracked from tears, "you didn't see the video. My baby on the ground covering her head while five girls kick and punch her. She did nothing Cedric, find a way to make it okay."
