Eventually, when one has been put in enough pain, your body will go a soul chilling numb that rattles through your consciousness. It's hard to explain unless you've been put into such a situation the way your body begins it's process of shutting down, starting by numbing your mind. You can see your body's response to pain, watch the goose skin bubble up, the shaking of your limbs, the twitches of your muscles as they still desperately try to form a response to the trauma, the flinches of your reflexes as they too pathetically try to react, and then your breathing starts to slow, the numbness settling to your lungs. It is the beginning of your nervous system's collapse, the start of your body shutting itself down, the beginning of your death.

That moment is where she is trapped, watching her arm twitch in a half ditch effort to get her to respond to the intense pain she had been feeling. The burn from the poison was long gone and yet her muscles still were fighting it off, behind every blink of her eyes was now her distant memories. The man with the long brown hair with a wicked fist, the dark closet that had been the only bedroom she ever knew, those strange orange eyes with a sneering grin, the cold underground that had become her new home, the man with the glasses and his insanity, the snake, the hospital, the bird, the brown eyes, the darkness. Was this really all her life had been?

A series of tortures and darkness, a toy used to no end for the goals of others people. The reality of how irrelevant her life had been was settling in with the numbness, there was no grand tale of adventure or comeback, she was a forgotten person. Someone who had never been known and had blindly obeyed those who caused her pain. How pathetic....

She watched the blood trickle down over the goosebumps on her arm, she couldn't feel it. Maybe this was the time that she would finally get to cross over but even then, who would be waiting for her there? She would be just as alone as she was here.

"Rei," Daiki's dark voice snapped her back into the present harshly, blinking past her memories she turned to her friend. Squinting up at him through the blinding sunlight that assaulted her pale eyes.

"Yeah?" She asked him, as if she hadn't been lost in her thoughts for what she now realized must have been hours. The fact that the sun's position indicated it was getting ready to set and their approach of the small village almost made her cringe inwardly at how long she must have been distracted. Daiki flicked his dark eyes to her with an unamused expression, a narrowed look being sent her way at her failed attempt to appear like she had been present. The fading sunlight reflected harshly off his dark piercings, they line a majority of his face down the bridge of his nose, between his eyes, along his high cheek bones, and his arched eyebrow as he shook his head with a sigh.

"You were lost again," was all he said. He turned his attention back in front of him, to the small village that they were now entering.

"Sorry," she turned away from him trying not to show her embarrassment. From the corner of her eye she saw him shake his head at her again, letting out a sigh.

"Quit apologiz-" he began to snap out at her but halted mid step instead. Rei's eyebrows scrunched together, stopping beside him she tried to see past the incoming sand storm to see what it was that had caught his attention. She frowned trying instead to concentrate on the chakra's around her to see if that had been what had peaked his attention, nothing. Nothing except for the stupid wind which chose to whip her dark cloak into her face at that exact moment, breaking her concentration.

"Is something there?" She asked him, reaching her hand up to hold the cloak back from her eyes in annoyance. Daiki nodded once to her in answer, his shoulders tense with whatever it was that he was sensing. Rei scanned the nearly empty streets in front of her, the incoming storm was resulting in the nearby bars and restaurants becoming increasingly packed but there was nothing that stood out to her amongst the bustling people.
