After they ate, the conversation between the two of them had been idle until Kakashi had mentioned her being bad at shogi. This of course led them right to where they were now, Rei fighting to ignore the sharp pain in her ribs and Kakashi across from her, just moves away from beating her in their game of shogi. Rei bit her lip, she was determined not to lose this round but things weren't looking good for her. Her eyes distracted her, their gaze landing on his forearms that were hidden just beneath his long sleeved shirt. She could see the outline of his lean muscles, could practically imagine how they would feel under her finger tips.
"Rei?" Kakashi's voice startled her.
"What? I went already," she defended herself with a faint blush on her cheeks. Kakashi chuckled at her reaction, shaking his head.
"Not that," he said while her face was aflame. He moved his piece into play and she frowned at the board, resting her hand on her chin.
"What is it then?" She asked him, her concentration broken from the game.
"You mentioned before that Orochimaru only came back for you once before, do you know why?" He asked her and she fumbled with the piece in her hand for a brief moment before biting the inside of her cheek.
"Two years ago he sent a group of ninja for hire while he thought Daiki was gone." Images of that day unwarrantedly flashed behind her eyes. "They were dead before they knew he was back, but Daiki kept one alive. They didn't know much, sputtered about Orochimaru wanting me for some training regime he was forming but Daiki wasn't exactly in the mood to talk." She grimaced at the memory, at the time that was the angriest she had seen him. "No one came after that first group and the whole incident just kind of got forgotten about," she told him at the same moment she made her move.
"A training regime," Kakashi mulled over the words with his eye turned to the board.
"Apparently, it doesn't make a lot of sense why he'd want me for that though." She scrunched her eyebrows at the memory, it was still one of the many things she didn't have an answer to.
"Could it be that jutsu you have?" Kakashi asked her, probably remembering the first time they met and Rei shook her head.
"I doubt it, I've never been able to use that jutsu without almost dying. I've only ever used it twice and the first time I was out for months, Orochimaru even banned Kabuto from letting me use it." She said, watching him move his piece. She caught his surprised look as he did so and she gave a small shrug. "I have a lot of chakra but I've never been able to control it well," she admitted to him.
"I don't understand why they only made the one attempt," Kakashi still seemed to be trying to make that piece fit.
"Well," her eyes stared sightlessly at the board. "You could chalk it up to the fact that we moved around a lot, Daiki's obsession with the Akatsuki did become intense." She said picking up the piece her eyes caught the kanji for the pawn as she laid it on the board. "But personally? Seeing Dai that way isn't a pretty sight." She said it quietly but Kakashi seemed to pick up on the message loud and clear.
"I can imagine they got a pretty clear message from him," he mused as he took her pawn. Rei gave him a nod in answer, struggling to find a move that wouldn't lead to her losing.
"Oh for hell sake," she cursed at the board. Kakashi gave a light chuckle at her outburst, Rei narrowing her eyes at him playfully. "You aren't going to win," she said determinedly moving one of her pieces just for him to immediately take it.
"Are you sure?" He asked her and she could hear the smirk she knew would be hidden just beneath his mask. He gave her a head tilt that mocked innocence and she smirked, moving her piece to take his she threw him an innocent smile.
