The sun was setting as Bella and I arrived at Sam and Leah's engagement party. Bella looked gorgeous in her flowing blue dress and her long dark hair hanging in loose curls. I let my long hair down and put on a white shirt and tie with my black jeans and trainers. The Uleys and Clearwater's had really gone all out for Sam and Leah. We heard the music coming from the house as we drove up. The house and bushes were decked out with pretty yellow lights that made it appear as if it was all surrounded by fireflies. A fancy white gazebo was put up in the front garden with a long table that we saw Leah's mother, Sue filling with food and drink.

We climbed out of the car and I saw Leah standing by the front door greeting her guests. She wore a beautiful green dress with a little gold necklace. It was strange to see her all dressed up. Her hair was made up and she wore red lipstick. Normally she never wore makeup or dresses. She was more like one of the boys, swaggering around in her baggy jeans and tank tops. As we walked up the path to greet her, she looked around with a worried expression and took out her mobile. Her fear turned to frustration when it was clear that whoever she phoned wasn't answering, and I realised she was still waiting for Sam. Where the Hell was he? "Babe, please pick up the phone. Everyone's starting to worry about you. If you're getting cold feet I'll understand, just please call me back. I love you so much."

"Hi, Leah," I said as we stepped towards her. Smiling, she put the phone away and hugged me. "I'm so glad you came, and I see you brought a date." She smirked, looking Bella up and down.

"Oh, this isn't a date. We're just friends." Belle nervously corrected her. "I'm Bella by the way."

"It's lovely to meet you, Bella. I'm Leah." She said giving her a hug.

"Sam's not here yet is he?" I had to ask. Her smile faded.

"I'm really getting worried. Everyone keeps telling me not to panic, that he's going to show up." She took a deep breath. "If he isn't here in one hour, I'm calling the police. Look, I'm gonna stay here and greet all the guests. You two go and have a good time. Mum spent ages getting the food ready. She'll go nuts if it goes to waste."

"OK, let us know when he shows up."

"Will do." She nervously smiled as we walked off. Now I was really starting to worry about Sam. It felt silly to worry. He was built like a brick shit house and had no problem standing up for himself, but when I remembered The news reports about the Washington Vampires and their victims, it made my stomach churn.

While getting a drink of coke at the table Bella asked me to tell her more about the Cullen family and the legend of the cold ones. God, that name sounded pretty silly like I was talking about ancient beer monsters. I couldn't understand her sudden obsession with the Cullens and those old stories, but I was happy if she was happy. We found an old log beside the house and sat down.

"I never really understood the feud between the Cullens and the tribe elders, but I'd heard there was a massive fallout after some of them were found trespassing on tribal lands. Someone said they were stealing stuff from the farms, others said it was vandalism and one of the guys told me they were caught killing a dear."

"Seriously?" She looked disgusted.

"It's only rumour and hearsay. Whatever happened, no one pressed charges and they agreed to never set foot here again."

"Tell me more about those legendary monsters, The cold ones. I read in a book that they also tried to invade your ancestor's lands." She smiled and crossed her legs as she moved closer to me. Was she trying to flirt with me? It was hard to tell with Bella.

"Yeah, your right. It was Thousands of years ago. You see, my ancestors were said to be these shapeshifters or werewolves of some sort who have been charged with protecting these lands from evil." I laughed.

"What kinds of evil?" She smiled.

"Well, there's a bunch of different adaptations of the stories with the monsters ranging from stone gargoyles, ogres, man-eating fairies that sparkle in the sunlight, but the most common one is vampires."

"Oh my god, really?" She giggled.

"Oh yes. It all started during a terrible winter. When the dark and stormy nights came, families would wake to find their children missing. Bodies began piling up and were found ripped apart by what the villagers first thought were bears and wolves. young, healthy men and maidens would seemingly just drop dead and their bodies would disappear after the funerals. Later on, loved ones of the dead claimed to have seen their deceased roaming the lands, calling out to them. Some women lost their sanity, claiming to have been impregnated by the creatures before dying in childbirth." I stopped for a moment to take a drink.

"Did the wolves ever stop them?" She asked.

I didn't have a chance to finish the story as Leah's aunt and uncle came running up the pathway in a panic.

Sue came running out the front door and worriedly hugged her sister. "Oh dear god, Honey it's gonna be alright?" She uttered, leading them towards the house.

"We've been searching for hours. At first, we thought she came here early to help you out with the party. When you said you hadn't seen her I knew something was wrong. Every time I try calling she won't answer." She cried.

A worried Leah came out the front door. "Mum, what's happening?" She cried.

"We better call the police now. Emily is missing. What about Sam?"

"I still can't reach him." She cried.

"Tell Charlie and the team to get here as soon as possible." Sue led them into the house while Leah frantically phoned the station.
