I'd been having nightmares since I arrived at the hospital. My head ached from time to time as I struggled to keep my eyes open. I don't know what was worse, the fear of closing my eyes only to never open them again or being awake long enough to see death coming right for me. After what happened at the morgue all the patients and members of staff were walking on eggshells. It only got worse the next day when a news report showed three empty graves at Forks cemetery. They had all been dug up, Lacey, the Griffins, even in Seattle Myres and that security guard were missing. Why? They were already dead. Wasn't that bad enough? Why put their families through more suffering by stealing their bodies? Sometimes the door to my room would open and I could see everyone nervously darting between rooms like frightened laboratory mice in an enormous white maze. The hospital had a remarkably cold atmosphere, exuding an unnatural silence that only served to emphasize how vulnerable and on edge we all felt. It was so horrible. I often hoped to escape the endless terror in my dreams but they brought no such luck.

The first night I dreamed of unblinking, yellow eyes looking down at me from the darkness. They gleamed with unnerving amusement as I tried to move, but couldn't. I saw nothing else in the darkness but felt icy cold hands on my skin, around my neck, over my chest and along my arms. I couldn't scream or even make a noise. Every night since the accident it was the same if not similar. I vaguely remember the doctors injected me with painkillers or something to help me sleep. I often thought perhaps that was the cause. One night as the eyes looked down at me I swore I could feel a sharp pain, like a needle in my arm. I must have been really out of it as the doctors took blood samples or something.

The next night as I Lay in the darkness unable to move, the eyes didn't appear. Instead, I heard the rustling of paper, and the tinkering of metal and other objects in the corner. someone was in the room with me. Not long after came a knock on the door followed by voices. "Come in." there were footsteps followed by a moment of silence as the door closed. "No need to worry about him. When she told me you were coming I took precautions." The man said in a calm composed voice. A voice I recognized but couldn't place.

"I can't stay for long. We all came as soon as we heard. Me, Irina and Kate, had to know what was happening. Your eldest told us everything as soon we got in the front door. You don't really suspect the wolves killed those people, do you? Irina thinks one or two murders would at the very least get you out of Forks and prevent you from expanding your coven." She said.

"I can't entirely rule it out but, the police claim there is more than one culprit, but say what you will about the Elder wolves, they're loyal beasts. They drew up the treaty to protect the humans, they'll honour it. They would never reason that a few lives are worth sacrificing just to get rid of us. If any wolf has gone rogue the elders will have no choice but to execute them for breaking the treaty. It's not like they can just send them to prison." he said.

"What other suspects do we have? Are any other Covens in the area recently? You might be looking at a Newborn. Maybe their sire slipped up, they broke loose, went on a killing spree, sired more..." The woman's voice slightly echoed across the room.

"Shhh, You want the orderlies to hear?" He whispered.

"Sorry." She said, lowering her tone. What the fuck is happing here?

"I can't rule it out either, but I have my doubts. It's true the culprits aren't keeping a low profile, but we've not seen any others in the area. That's a lot of bodies in a few weeks and no attempt to hide the evidence, typical of a Newborn, but..." he trailed off.

"But what?" She asked.

"It's too... Organized." He said as if not quite sure how to answer.

"Organized? How is any of that organized?" She asked.

"Before the Griffins were killed, these murders had been relegated to just one victim every other day. Most Newborns are like junkies in a severe state of withdrawal, if their sires fail to keep them under control it's like a shark to blood, they'll devour anyone in their path regardless of the danger. All the victims were far from where anyone could witness their deaths but not enough that a Newborn wouldn't target more people. The Corwin girl was found at Mill creek across from the rainforest trailer park, not that far from Blakeslee's bar and grill. Why just go after one random girl when there are two spots nearby to gorge itself on victims?" He said.

"That is strange. You are sure there are no others in the area?" Tanya's tone of voice was more concerned than intrigued at this point.

"Of course I'm sure. There is only me and... my family." The words seemed to stun him as he realized what she was implying. "No, not after last time." Last time? What the fuck? I thought as I became more and more aware that whatever the doctors had given me was wearing off. I had to resist the urge to move or make any noise that might give away that I was awake. "Believe me, after Gatlinburg that bitch would never dare betray our family again. I made damned sure of that. As for our latest arrival, he's on a very tight leash and watched like a hawk."

"Come back with us."

"To Alaska?" he asked.

"If your children are truly innocent, I and my coven can vouge for you as long as we stick together." She urged him. "And, If any of them really have turned traitor, you'll figure it out and be free to deal with them as you please."

"Are you sure it's my coven's safety you're after? Or are you still pining for my young soldier?" He laughed.

"It is your wife's wish to see her eldest son married to someone of her choosing, and you need allies. You said yourself that those dogs have been keeping a close watch on everyone. If those fools slip up and take another victim after you've already gone, there would be no question of your innocence." The woman's voice rang out. "Give me a chance and I'll give your solider all the persuasion he needs." She laughed.

That was two weeks ago when Dr Tanner insisted that my concussion from the gash on my head was deathly serious and that I would be under constant supervision for a long time. I can vaguely remember Dr Tanner examining my wounds and looking very confused as she looked down towards me. She was quite young, maybe in her late 20s to early 30s. She had short strawberry-blonde hair and green eyes. I initially put her confusion down to being new to her job, but when she returned for the last time to do a final check-up she brought another doctor. "Hello Mr Crowley I'm Dr Gail, I'll be examining you today." He said looking rather exasperated. Dr Gail was a much older man with a stubby, short body, permed grey hair and a beak-like nose. "Now I don't what Dr Tanner has been telling you, but the idea that you can go home today is completely out of the question." He started to remove my bandages and clean the stitches.

"Wait Dr Tanner never said anything about going home, today," I said, feeling very uncomfortable as he pawed at my head.

"I was going to ask..." Dr Tanner tried to speak but Dr Gail loudly cut her off.

"DR TANNER! This boy has a very serious head injury. One that won't just magically heal itself after two bloody weeks. If you so much as attempt to send this boy home I'll be forced to get the law involved and you may lose your job for negligence." He scowled as her eyes fell to the floor before turning back to me. She looked almost childlike as she held her clipboard to her chest. I couldn't blame her.

"Hey, you don't need to yell at her. She's just trying to help." I protested as he peeled away the plaster covering my stitches.

"I don't care what she was trying to do, you are not leaving this hospital in such a state of ..." His voice stopped as his snobby expression turned to bewilderment. "What in blazes is this?"
