The trial came swiftly. The courtroom was suffocating, packed with reporters and spectators buzzing over the Fentons' case. Danny sat between Vlad and Loki, hands clammy, heart in his throat. Across the aisle, Jack tried to look cheerful, but Maddie's glare was sharpened steel. At their table sat Matt Murdock. Blind, cane propped at his side, yet somehow radiating absolute control. The judge entered. "This court will hear the custody case of Daniel James Fenton."

Maddie was the first to take the stand. She began calmly enough, talking about raising Danny, their family in Amity Park, how she only wanted her son "back where he belonged." But when Murdock rose for cross-examination, her composure frayed. "Mrs. Fenton," Murdock said evenly, "you say your son belongs with you. But tell me—how do you reconcile that with attempting to forcibly abduct him from his school cafeteria yesterday?"

Maddie stiffened. "That was—That was a mistake. We panicked."

"A mistake?" Murdock's voice sharpened. "Dragging a minor into a vehicle against his will, brandishing weapons, endangering other students—that was panic?"

"Objection!" the Fentons' lawyer barked.

"Overruled," the judge said grimly.

Murdock stepped closer, his sightless gaze somehow cutting right through Maddie. "Mrs. Fenton, is it true you've openly referred to your son as a specimen? A subject for your ghost research?"

Maddie faltered. Her jaw tightened. "He is not a specimen!" she snapped. "He's—he's our boy, and he needs to stop pretending—"

"Pretending what?" Murdock pressed.

"Pretending he's theirs!" Maddie shouted, pointing at Vlad and Loki, her composure unraveling into raw fury. "They stole him from us! Brainwashed him! He's ours!"

Gasps rippled through the courtroom. Jack tried to hush her, but Maddie's voice cracked, the venom pouring out. The judge banged his gavel. "Order!"

Murdock's voice, calm and steady, cut through the noise. "No further questions, Your Honor."

When Danny was called to the stand, his voice shook, but Murdock guided him gently. Danny spoke of safety, of fear, of nights where he flinched at shadows—then of Loki's embrace when the nightmares came, Vlad's promises when he thought no one heard. "I don't feel safe with them anymore," Danny whispered. "I feel safe with my dads."

The courtroom was silent. In closing arguments, Murdock rose, his cane steady beside him. "This case is not about biology. It is not about whose blood runs in Daniel's veins. It is about love, safety, and trust. The Fentons have shown disregard for all three. My clients, on the other hand, have proven time and again that they will sacrifice anything to protect this boy. Family is not defined by who shares your DNA—it is defined by who shows up. By who stays."

The verdict was swift. Custody awarded to Vlad Masters and Loki Odinson. Jack and Maddie were denied visitation rights pending a psychological evaluation. Danny's new name—Daniel Masters—was sealed into the record. When they left the courthouse, Danny clung to Vlad and Loki, tears of relief streaming down his face. For once, he didn't feel like prey. He felt at home.

The name change came first. When the judge's gavel had fallen, Danny barely understood what it meant. Daniel Masters. It was written, legal, and permanent. A name that bound him to Vlad and Loki in the eyes of the law. But the next morning, as he sat at the breakfast table with his new birth certificate in his hands, it sank in. The letters blurred with his tears. "Does this mean..." His voice cracked, small, fragile. "I'm not... their son anymore?"

Vlad reached across the table, steady hand closing over his. "No, Daniel. You'll always be you. This paper doesn't erase who you were—it just affirms who you are now."
