Chapter 6

Nonna collapsed onto the ground as she ran out of breath from hauling Austin throughout the temple. Thankfully his vest absorbed most of the impact of the bullet and only knocked him unconscious from shock. Mark and Private Cartwright had been covering her as they fell back from, who was surprisingly, Austin's older brother. The same brother who's supposed to be deceased. Unfortunately Private Taylor Prince got separated from them while they were retreating. Nonna could only hope that he managed to get away unharmed, and hopefully rendezvous with another member of the team later.

"What the hell was that!?" Carl exclaimed. "Who was that!?"

"Its not possible. Cody died back in twenty-ten. How is he here?" Mark frantically wondered to himself. Nonna slowly recaught her breath and wondered that herself. That was Cody Mayes? Austin's older brother? The same brother her husband spoke so highly of? He shot his own younger brother! How could he do that!?

"What now Lieutenant?" Mark said looking over at her. Nonna's breathing came rapid again. She didn't know what to do. All she could do was look down at her husband's face. He hasn't yet woken up and a tear threatened to fall from her eyes at that. They had just patched up their relationship, so was fate planning to take him from her again? She couldn't bare it if that were to happen.

Mark sighed and shook his head. Nonna was in no state to give orders.

"Carl, you stay here and watch over the Lieutenant, I'll do some recon and be back in ten micks." Mark said.

"Roger." Carl said keeping his eyes focused on where they had come from.

Mark sighed again and started heading down the next hallway in front of them. he would scout out the next area of the temple and report back in hopes to get out of here as fast as possible.

Carl sighed himself now. He didn't know what was going on anymore. This mission was going FUBAR real fast, real hard. If anything he would rather be back on the IDF base talking to that girl he started being sweet on, Azusa. Of course he would always make sure that Austin never found out he was talking to her as the last guy she was with treated her rather poorly. Carl would never understand why someone would do that to a wonderful woman like Azusa. She was so nice and sweet, and she always laughed at his jokes. Carl glanced back at the Lieutenant and saw how she had laid Austin's head in her lap and started running her fingers through his hair. Carl wondered if he could be like that one day.

"Lieutenant, are you ok?" Carl asked. Nonna raised her eyes to look at him before quickly going back to Austin.

"Is this my punishment for focusing so much of my life on trying to find Kai Adachi that I have to lose the one man who made me feel like the most loved woman in the world?" Nonna asked rhetorically.

"I wouldn't know ma'am. I've never really been in love before, so I have no real experience with it." Carl said. Nonna looked at him again and eyed him.

"Yet you and Azusa seem to spend a lot of time conversing on the phone." Nonna said. Carl stiffed at the mention.

"Ugh, d-did she tell you?" Carl asked.

"Not right away. I figured it out. Those girls are family to Austin and I, and the last man to date Azusa was horrible to her, something I know you are aware of. So if you continue to pursue her do so carefully please." Nonna said. Carl's stiffness calmed down at her words. She must love Azusa and her friends a lot to say such things.
