Desires and Contracts

Ch. 1

The sun was shining bright on this beautiful March morning. Usually, I don't have enough time in the mornings to appreciate and observe my surroundings, but since I got ready early today I decided to take in the weather as I walked to the school bus area. I'm in my final semester of college, and the number of times I thought about giving up, I tried to tell myself, "I, Skylar Kane, can finish anything that I start!"

The university offers students who need transportation with a university bus that is included with tuition, and since I don't have a car, I take advantage of this opportunity. I work at a small restaurant after class that is not far from my apartment. The restaurant "CabinTop" is a high-end fancy Italian restaurant where many wealthy people go to eat. It's open only for lunch and dinner hours but the place is always packed, especially since we serve the best Italian dishes. I enjoy working there since the tips are great, but my manager can be extremely stuck up and rude. I also babysit a cute little angel, Natalie, Tuesdays-Fridays from 3 pm- 5 pm and sometimes the weekends too if the parents need me. They pay really well and are so sweet! It's obvious they are rich and run successful businesses, but they never flash their wealth or act stuck up.

Right now it's 8:30 am and the bus is almost to the campus. Since it's Tuesday, I only have two classes back-to-back, meaning I'll be done by 1 pm!

After my classes, I decided to stay at the library until 2 pm so I can work on some assignments until I have to head over to the Diamond residence to babysit Natalie. They live in the nicer part of town, so I usually will take an Uber from my apartment to their house, or mansion I should say.

I call an Uber and I'm on my way to see Natalie. I've been babysitting her since last year and I pretty much know her family well, which is nice because I don't feel awkward or anything whenever they come to visit her when I'm still there. I always enjoy dressing nicely for school so I never feel the need to change my outfit when I babysit. Today's outfit choice was a black top with light blue jeans. I'm a Converse girl so basically with every single outfit I wear Converse.

Once I arrive I ring the doorbell and Mary, the housekeeper, opens the door for me.

"Hi dear! How are you?"

"I'm good Mary, how are you today?"

"Good, good, come in."

"HI SKYLAR! GUESS WHAT I'M EATING RIGHT NOW" shouted Natalie, who was sitting on one of the bar stools at the kitchen island.

"Hey, Natalie! Let me guess. Are you eating mac and cheese?"

"Hahahaha YEAH!" exclaimed Natalie.

"That's not fair, Mac and cheese is my favorite too. Where's mine?" I said, pretending to be offended.

"Oh sweetie, I can fix you a plate right away," Mary said.

I happily accepted the plate of mac and cheese because 1 it's one of my favorite types of food and 2 I will always accept food.

As Natalie and I were happily eating, I remember that it was her birthday in a few weeks so I decided to mess with her.

"Hey Mary, I have a question. Someone's birthday is coming up soon but I can't quite remember whose?"

"It's mine! My birthday is soon!" said Natalie.

"Hmm I don't know, this person is turning 4 years old."

"I'm turning 4!"

"No there's no way! You are going to be 3 soon. Therefore, it cannot be your birthday coming up."

Mary laughed at our silliness but suddenly began talking to someone behind me. "Good afternoon boys!"

"Hi Mary. Hi Skylar. What are you guys talking about?" asked Austin.
