Chapter 1

I walked with Mikasa down to our area, ready for dinner rations after the intense training. Mikasa and I plopped ourselves down at a table in the corner of the room with dinner - a baked potato and some bread each. Eren, Armin and the others were nowhere to be seen, so we sat and chatted for a while, waiting for them to come through the door.

I finished my meal and put my scout jacket back on. Eren soon joined us at the table with his food. The bustling of people around us was interrupted when the wooden door swung open. Captain Levi came in, followed by Section Commander Hange. Once everyone realised there was no problem, they got back to eating and talking. It looked as though they were looking for someone however, so I kept my eyes trained on them to see who it was. Hange caught my eye and grinned, beckoning for me to come over. I exchanged a glance with Mikasa and Eren, and Levi called for Eren too. I tapped Mikasa on the shoulder as a goodbye and Eren followed me. We left the little building and stuck behind our superiors until they stopped in a little field lit in the dark by torches.

"Section Commander Hange, Captain Levi, sir!" I said, chin in the air while I saluted them. Eren did the same.

"Y/N, you're with Hange, Eren's with me." Levi said.

"Yes, captain!" We said at the same time.

We parted as I walked next to Hange. She led me to a dimly lit area surrounded by trees and plopped herself down by one of them. I stood, not knowing what to do, but she signalled for me to sit down opposite her, and I obeyed.

The flame from the torch by her flickered and cast a warm glow over her skin. Her hazel eyes glistened with life and passion, her goggles resting over it. She had messy brown hair that was pulled back into a scruffy ponytail, the loose hair flopped over her goggles. She was quite attractive. I snapped out of it, chiding myself for getting hooked on her appearance. Hopefully she hadn't noticed me staring.

"You may be wondering why I brought you here; I'd like to make an offer. I've heard many great things about you from Captain Levi, and I saw you in action in the battle for Trost, and you caught my eye while fighting, but I have never been able to speak to you in person. It's a pleasure!" She said happily.

"Thanks, I'm surprised! The attention's usually on Mikasa. I've seen and heard wonderful things about you too, the pleasure is mine, Section Commander! I've been especially intrigued by your experiments on the titans and I'm impressed!" I said, quite stunned, but happy about the compliments she gave me.

"Ah, thank you. That ties nicely to the next point. I've heard that you're quite the scientist yourself!" I blushed. "I'm glad to know that you are just as interested in my work as I am. It'd be nice to have an extra pair of scientist hands while I'm working, and I would love to have someone keen, and kind, to do that. I've seen some of your abilities, so, I'm wondering if you would like to be my personal assistant. What do you say?"

I looked at her wide eyed, and she chuckled. "You're looking at me like I told you a Titan could fly! Though, who knows, they might..."

"Are you sure? Me? I don't think I'm as great as you think..."

"Well, if this is Y/N L/N, then you are the one! I think you doubt yourself a little too much, others see you better than you do."

"If you really think so, then of course! It'd be a pleasure to assist you, Section Commander!" I exclaimed, face pink with embarrassment and happiness.

"Another thing, I asked Commander Erwin if I could have a new room for my future assistant, so you won't have to share with the other scouts. It took some time convincing him, but I managed to in the end. You gotta work hard though!" Hange said, half-jokingly.

"I- I really appreciate that, Section Commander! I've never had my own room before... I'll do everything I can to help you and earn the room! Thank you, truly!" I stuttered.

"Alright, then!" Hange sung, "well, work starts tomorrow, I'll show you to your new room right away!" She got up and I walked beside her.

"Oh, Section Commander?" I asked.

"Hm?"

"Do you know what Captain Levi is doing with Eren?"

"I trust you can keep a small secret," she said leaning in, and I nodded. "Well, we are going to be running some tests on him in the coming weeks, to see what he can do in his Titan form, after seeing how powerful Annie was. You'll be assisting me actually; it'd be good to have an extra pair of hands helping! Don't be worried, we won't push him too hard, he'll be fine. I think all Levi is doing is telling Eren in advance so he's ready for it."

"Oh ok." I said, flustered from how close Hange had gotten. I told myself not to be, but what was this feeling? I shouldn't have felt like that around my superior; it wasn't like there was a huge age gap or anything, she was only two years older than me. But it still felt, odd. I pushed it to the back of my mind.

We entered a large building and Hange showed me where her office was, and then guided me to my room, which was only a few doors down from her's. We stood outside my door. She dropped a pin in my hand and explained that if people saw that, they would know that I wasn't just a scout, I was an assistant too. It was a silver Scout regiment logo, with a little bit of gold on the edge. I pinned it onto my uniform and thanked her for everything. She put her hand on my shoulder and squeezed it gently. This put butterflies in my stomach.

"Sleep well!" I said.

"You too!" Hange replied and waved as she walked back down to her room.

I opened the door and saw a clean bedroom. It was simple but I still liked it, just a bed, a small shelf and a desk. I found a neat set of folded pyjamas on the bed which I slipped into and tucked myself in the thin covers before drifting off to sleep.

I hope you enjoyed the first chapter! As you might be able to tell, I prefer writing in first person (I/me). I added that little badge thing in there idk why I thought that it was cool at the time. <33

I'm not sure how often I'll update, maybe once or twice a week since school's gonna be a bitch but we'll see. The whole story will mainly be based on Hange and Y/N's relationship, not focussing much on the actual AoT storyline.
