The serenity of the day lasted another hour before your phone rang, interrupting Roxie's story about two of the kids breaking into the raptor paddock on their very first night at camp.
You looked at your phone screen, surprised to see Claire's number pop up. You answered before it could ring again, holding it up to your ear and giving Owen a puzzled look.
"Hello?"
"Y/N! Hi, I know it's your day off today, but I have a time sensitive matter that I could really do with your help with."
You all but rolled your eyes. Claire was a workaholic. She probably didn't even know what a day off actually felt like. You'd never known her have one in the time you'd been at the park, and she'd started years before you. You knew that her and Owen had been out on a date once, when you'd been working at the park for about a month. But it hadn't gone well. Other than that, she rarely switched off from work mode... Not that you could blame her. She'd worked her ass off to get into the position she had, and to be fair to her, no one could run the place like she did. She knew more about the park than anyone, even the actual owners.
That was why you found yourself nodding, getting to your feet as you did so. "No problem, Claire. What do you need?"
You heard her sigh of relief, and then- "Thank you, Y/N. You're a life saver. I don't suppose you know where Owen is? I tried calling him but his phone is off."
You put your hand on Owen's back, stroking it softly. "Yeah, he's here. He's on break, do you need him too?"
"Yes! Please, if you could both come. Mr Masrani has asked for you two personally to come and evaluate a new paddock for vulnerabilities." She explained, and you put her on speaker so the other two could hear her as well.
"For what creature?" Owen asked, taking a long drink of his coke. You sat back down, leaning closer to the phone, intrigued.
"The new attraction... It's supposed to open in three weeks, but we've already had set backs... That's why we need you two to come and check the enclosure." You noticed that she didn't actually answer your question, but you knew you weren't getting anything out of her over the phone, so you just agreed and got to your feet again. You hung up the phone and saying goodbye to Roxie, wishing her luck with the kids, and then walked over to Owen's jeep, promising Roxie you'd be back for your own later. She just waved you off and started back towards the camp.
"I offered our services tomorrow. To keep the campers entertained for a couple of hours with the raptors." You told Owen as he started the engine, and he nodded, seeming happy with the idea. You knew he liked kids, and was good with them too. Whenever he did a tour of the raptors, he was always a hit with them, and it put him in a good mood for the rest of the shift. You two hadn't had the discussion yourselves yet, but you knew he'd be a great dad if you ever decided to have some of your own. You weren't ready just yet, but the thought of Owen as a dad definitely made you want them at some point.
A hand on your bare thigh snapped you out of your thoughts and you looked over to see Owen smiling at you from the drivers seat. "What are you thinking about?"
You put your hand on his and squeezed. "Maybe we should get a puppy?" You decided against telling him the truth, not wanting to put the thought into his head when you weren't ready to have that conversation yet.
"A puppy?" He seemed surprised and you hid your grin. "The girls aren't enough for you anymore?"
The girls... Of course that would complicate any future additions to the family. One of you would have to give up your dream, at least for a little while... You stopped that train of thought. You needed to get baby thoughts out of your head. Where had this all come from? Instead, you shrugged and faced forward.
