"Gon." Kurapika tapped Gon gently on his shoulder. "Wake up. It's time for school."
The raven-haired boy groaned as he stretched. He was having a really nice dream, but it got disturbed. "Do I have to go?" Gon yawned. He rubbed his eyes as he sat up in bed. Kurapika giggled. "Yes, my son, you have to. Otherwise, your grades will get worse. And isn't you didn't do too well on your last Maths test?"
Gon cheeks flushed at the reminder. With that, he jumped out of bed and headed straight for the bathroom. Kurapika smiled as he watched his son. Gon made him so happy. He made him feel like he had a purpose on life. Something to live for...
"GON! WHERE'S MY SCHOOLBAG?!"
Gon's best friend in the whole world, Killua, screamed from downstairs. He couldn't locate his schoolbag. He was pacing up and down the kitchen with a look of stress on his face. 'Killua, I found it!" Gon ran down the stairs with a red bag in his hands. He had a huge smile on his face. "It was in Mom's room."
"Ah," he said. He took it with a sigh of relief. "Thanks, Gon. But the next time you lose my bag, I'll sneak into your house at night and steal your Nintendo Switch! And I'll delete your Minecraft account!"
"NO!!!!! NOT MY MINECRAFT ACCOUNT!" Gon's face turned pale. He couldn't bear the thought of his Minercraft account being deleted. He'd worked so hard to get one single diamond. It took him 1 whole year to find it. "Please, Killua! Anything but that!!!"
Killua laughed hysterically. The look on Gon's face was truly a sight to behold. "I'll never do that, dummy!" He stuck out his tongue at his friend. Kurapika came down the stairs to see what the commotion was all about.
"Killua, did you find your bag?"
"Nah," he said, then proceeded to point his index finger at Gon. "Gon found it. He also happens to be the reason why it got lost in the first place."
Gon rubbed his head nervously. "Heh..."
"Gon," sighed Kurapika. He rubbed his eyes. "Can't you see we're rushing? I have no time for your games. You boys need to eat quickly. I don't want you to miss the bus."
Gon pouted. He didn't like it when his dad got mad or upset. Kurapika was the only family Gon had. He wasn't prepared to ruin his relationship with him.
"I'm sorry, Dad." Gon began to sob.
"Gon, please don't call me-" Kurapika paused for a moment. "It's... it's okay, love. I wasn't mad. I just don't want you to be late, is all."
Gon wiped away his tears, then sat down at the breakfast. A few minutes later, Kurapika set down a hot plate of eggs, bacon and hasbrowns in front of his son and Killua. The young boys ate their fill and grabbed their bags. Killua waved bye to Kurapika and rushed out the door. Gon reached out to his dad for a kiss. Kurapika kissed Gon's cheeks lovingly, then waved him off.
Through the window, Kurapika could see them board the big yellow bus that would take them to York New Middle School. The bus zoomed off in a blink of an eye.
Kurapika sighed. Things have been tough lately. He hasn't been taking his divorce well, and work was becoming even more stressful. Not to mention he was having an identity crisis...
