I set my drink down as Maven wraps an arm around my waist pulling me to the bedroom. He shuts the door and shuffles on his feet, "Can we go to the roof?"
I smile at him and nod, he sighs in relief and walks over to the window opening it. He climbs out and waits for me.
"We could've gone through the front door..." I point towards the bedroom door,
He laughs shushing me, "Just get out here."
I laugh and climb through the window; he grabs my arms by my elbows, and we float up to the roof. He lets go and sits down, bringing his knees up to his chest.
I sit beside him looking at him with a little concern, "I'm sorry about all that stuff. My mom can be... a little over the top sometimes."
He sighs looking at the roof tiles, "Why do I feel so weird here?"
I shuffle closer to him and lay my head on his shoulder. "They're making it feel weird, you're doing great."
"I think they're just trying to help me. I mean, I grew up knowing nothing living inside that hotel. And you learned about everything growing up in Santa Claus." He mumbles sadly,
I nod and lace my fingers with his rubbing a thumb across his knuckles. "Santa Cruz. And don't beat yourself up over this, you're not used to leaving the hotel. You're going to feel weird for a while. And we don't even have to move. We can just find our own place in Transylvania you know?"
He shrugs, laying his head on his free hand, "No, maybe if Dennis grows up away from Transylvania, he won't be so freaky, like me."
I lift my head and glare at him, I slide my hand from his and cup his face. He leans into my touch and looks at me with glassy blue eyes, "You aren't a freak, not in the slightest. You're wonderful. You're funny, sweet, charismatic, charming and so, so fun to be around. I'd be so lucky if Dennis turned out even the slightest like you. Whether we live in Transylvania or not. I don't care where we are, as long as I have you and our son." A smile slowly grows on his face as his eyes squint with it.
"There's the smile I love so much." I mumble, he laughs and rolls his eyes.
"I love you. You know what? As long as we're all together, we'll be happy anywhere. Even at the hotel." He says, pulling me closer to him with a soft smile. He lifts my chin and goes to kiss me when my phone vibrates spooking us both.
I groan and ignore it as he laughs, and we try again only for it to keep going off. I let out an annoyed grumble as I pulled my phone out opening the text from Emery captioning 'this looks like Denny' I furrowed my eyebrows and clicked the attachment.
It plays a video of a kid falling off a tower and someone catching him. My eyes widen as I look closer. The head of red hair, round face.
"Holy shit. Call your dad!" I nearly shout and Maven pulls his phone out, fumbling with it as he calls his dad's number.
"Yes, honeybunch?" He answers, another close up of his face.
"Dad? Where are you?" Maven asks, sharing a look with me.
"Um... we're outside the hotel having a little cookout. It's perfectly safe."
I glare at Dracula as a piercing siren of emergency services breaks through the phone. "What's that noise? Is that a siren?"
He nervously smiles at us looking around off camera, "Oh, those are just some wailing banshees checking in. Quiet you banshees. We're trying to have a perfectly safe cookout over here. —Mommy! I wanna say hi! Mommy! Papa Drac tried teaching me how to fly!—"
I snatched the phone from Maven, my anger boiling in my veins, "Dracula, I swear to fucking god!"
The phone goes everywhere showing blurry bright orange flames and then trees, "Wait a minute, is that the mother?" I hear a man ask as Dracula's phone smashes into what seems to be face.
"Oh, no! Static again!" He makes those same noises again.
"No! You know what fuck you! We're coming back to the hotel right now. And my son better be there, or I swear Dracula. You will be sorry." I seethe out into the call before hanging up. I grip the phone in a death hold as I stand up.
"Let's go." I growl out as I hop off the low hanging roof.

I slam my hands onto the airport lobby desk, the lady slowly looks up at me chewing gum. "Two tickets to Transylvania now."
She sneers at me looking me up and down as I glare at her, "You wanna go where?"
"Transylvania as soon as possible." I try again, straining to sound more polite.
She looks at her computer clicking away, "We don't fly direct to Transylvania."
I groan and clench my hands in fists. "You don't? Since fucking when?"
She briefly looks at me, "You can go to Bucharest, but you'll have to switch places in Chicago and then Zurich."
I shove the woman's computer to the side making her look at me. "When would we get there?"
"Well, the Chicago flights delayed due to bad weather."
I had the urge to punch her in her snotty face, seemingly reading my very thoughts. Maven grabs my hands and pulls them down from the desk. Growling at the lady, "So two seats in coach?"
He releases a groan, "No!"
He pulls out the poncho mom gave him and puts it on along with the hat. He rushes us out of the airport and turns into a bat. He grabs the fabric of the bar on my backpack and lifts us into the air.

I see the castle fast approaching as Maven growls, "Wasn't there?" I ask loud enough for him to hear. He shakes his head glaring straight ahead as he sees his father at the entrance of the hotel.
He sets me down on my feet before morphing back into himself. I pull Maven's phone out of my pocket when it vibrates. I glare daggers at Dracula when he appears on the screen.
"So hey, when are you going to get here already? We've been waiting..." He trails off when he looks up seeing me and Maven staring daggers at him. I hang up and set the phone away.
"Give me my son." I spit out as Maven stood firmly beside me staring his father down.
"We just went out for some avocados." He tries to save ass,
Dennis smiles up at me, "Mommy I flew!" My eyes don't leave Dracula's.
"I saw." I growl out holding my phone out playing the video Emery sent me. Dracula's eyes widen before his face drops in shame and he sighs. I crouch down and scoop Dennis up in my arms breathing a sigh of relief. Maven bends down running a hand though Dennis' hair.
"I was worried Dennis wasn't safe around other monsters. Now I don't even feel like he's safe around you." Maven mutters, his face dropping in sadness. I stand up holding Dennis close to me.
"But I was just—"
"What was it you said? Human, monster, unicorn. That it didn't matter?" Maven cuts him off again glaring. "We'll have his birthday here on Wednesday. Then we're moving."
Dracula looks at his son with glossy eyes. "Please, Mavey, don't leave."
He looks away placing a hand on my back, "Maybe you let humans into your hotel dad. But I don't think you've let them into your heart." He gently pushes the small of my back walking us up into the hotel.
