I stare at my family painted up as zombies overacting the part. I sigh and set my drink down. I'd gotten into my costume from when I first got here–it was a bit more of a snug fit then last I wore it. Emery decided to be a vampire too for the sole reason of not wanting to act sluggish and zombie-like.
"God this reminds me of Halloween sophomore year." He shivered with a sneer.
I let out a laugh and pushed his arm, "Don't even remind me."
Maven looks back at me unsure before my mom laughs. "What do you think Maven? I think I'm starting to like being creepy."
I walk over to him and take the platter from his hands and scoop him away from mom as he laughs awkwardly. I smile seeing Dennis dressed up in his costume, his fiery hair poking out as bat ear-like things.
"You're lucky we don't call the authorities. Let's go, my hero! Cebause I'm Batman!" He giggles and jumps off the chair. "Yes, to the Batmobile."
I jump and watch with wide eyes as Winnie tackles him to the floor with a thud licking his face. I place a hand on my heart exhaling.
"I'm never gonna get used to that." I mumble as Maven laughs rubbing my back.
The kids from earlier walk up and laugh at Dennis, "Got your butt kicked by a girl, Batman." Winnie growls and barks at the boys affectively scaring them as they back off crying. "Yeah. Whatever. I'm totally not about to cry."
I smirk, feeling only slightly bad about it. Maven spins me around setting the platter in my hands down. He lifts my chin smiling down at me.
"Have I told you you look gorgeous? Because you look gorgeous, my vampire bride." He mumbles rubbing his thumb on my jaw as he slides his hand to cup my face, tilting my head up by the chin — those butterflies filling my stomach like I was the same nineteen-year-old girl meeting him those years ago.
"Oh? Are we not married anymore?" I tilt my head to the side as he rolls his eyes and kisses me.
"Shut up." He mumbles against my red lips before kissing me again. I laugh and lay my head on his shoulder as he holds me to him. I jolt in his arms as the doors slam open. Maven turns his head towards the sound, and I peer over his shoulder.
"Alright. Where is my grandson?"
I felt Maven's arms tighten around my body as his nerves grew. I slide my hands comfortingly up and down his back. "It'll be okay, he'll love Dennis." He smiles down at me.
"So, you run a hotel now? From prince of darkness to king of room service."
"Yes, so good to see you. I'll be right with you." Dracula says nervously.
I watch my parents approach Vlad, most likely my mom insulting him. Frank pushes them away awkwardly and nervously diverting his focus elsewhere.
I look up at Maven and he smiles down at me again, "I should probably go talk to my dad."
I shrug, "He's probably shitting his pants right now." Maven laughs and nods as he reluctantly breaks away from me.
"Elysia!" I turn around confused as I spot Frank waving me over. I walk over and freeze, peering up at Vlad as he eyes me up and down.
"This is Dracula's daughter-in-law." Frank leaves my side,
I clam up as he waits for me to introduce myself, "Uhm... I'm Countess Elysia."
He looks me up and down, again before leaning closer. I shrink into myself.
"Mommy!" I look down and spot Dennis running up to me. I felt my tension and fear sink away as I lift my son up into my arms.
