A few days later, Eisa found Loki sitting on the shoe bench in their closet, drumming his fingers nervously on the lid of the box in his lap.

"Loki? What are you doing?"

He quickly stashed the box under the bench, "Nothing, Dove. Just lost in thought, I suppose."

He stood and busied himself reorganizing his sock drawer.

"What were you thinking about?" Eisa walked over and stilled his hands, "You have been very distracted lately."

He picked up her hand and kissed it, "My mind has been on a meandering journey far and wide. I will not burden you with all the trivial details."

"Are you sure? I don't mind."

"I am sure. What have you got there?" He motioned to the parchment envelope in her other hand.

"A messenger brings us news from the infirmary. I wanted us to read it together." Loki took the parchment envelope and broke the wax seal.

"It is from Healer Ebbe." His eyes skimmed the note and his features darkened, "Despite their best efforts, Greta has gone to be with her ancestors."

Eisa's hand flew to her mouth, "No."

He folded the note and stuffed it into his pocket. He pulled her into his arms and held her tightly. She cried hard as fat tears rolled down her face.

"She didn't deserve this."

"I know, sweetling."

"She was so kind."

He hummed in agreement.

She choked and sobbed for several minutes.

"Oh, Loki," she wiped her nose with her hand, "She is dead because of me."

"It was not your fault, Dove. Whoever orchestrated the attack is responsible. We will find out who did this and make them pay. Your only crime was marrying me." He placed a hand on the side of her face and dried her cheek with his thumb.

"A crime I would commit again if given the chance," she whispered.

"Stupid girl," Loki whispered back.

She gave him a half smile before burying her face in his chest again. He stroked her hair and cooed reassuring words as they stood in their closet and mourned their chambermaid.

"Eisa?" Loki called for his wife one evening after dinner. She had slipped away and disappeared while he was relaxing on the balcony. He followed the sound of soft music to their bedroom.

"What's all this?" Loki looked around the candlelit room with a smirk on his face.

"Close the door and take a seat next to the fireplace," Eisa called from behind the bathroom door.

"What are you up to?" He removed his boots and took a seat in the armchair.

"You'll see."

He was instantly filled with excited energy, a giddy grin on his face. He ran his fingers through his hair to tame it and opened a couple buttons on the top of his shirt before relaxing back and trying to look nonchalant.
