When the lights went off, my survival instincts kicked in. I knew what was happening. I'd listened to like a million lockdown podcasts and I knew what to do. Sadly the window couldn't be fixed. But what were the chances they'd punch through it? I put a chair under the door knob and walked to the back with the others but not before arming myself with a textbook.

We'd only been in the back for a short time before the door knob started rattling but the chair held strong. I felt a strange sense of pride. Did I just save us all in one swift movement? I'm not that type of person, but now I might end up being the hero instead of the quiet kid with the weird headphones. Everyone thinks I'm stupid because my stupid parents put me in the special needs program to punish me.

But my thoughts are interrupted by the glass window shattering. Fuck. I don't let it discourage me. I stand up and walk to the door. People hiss at me to get back, that I'm an idiot. But I'm about to save their asses. They'll thank me later. I slam the textbook into the hand of the person who punched the window. It was already red and bloody but I'm pretty sure I broke bones. I dash back to the back as they kick open the door. Crap! I forgot to put the chair back! They march in and I try to save as many people as I can. I'm pulling some petrified popular girl out of the way when three bullets hit my back.

I fall to my knees and it's over. I'm dying in my desperate attempt to save everyone. Before long, this classroom will be a pile of bloody kids' bodies. We never got to live, to experience what we deserved. We'll never go to college, have kids of our own, or become adults, and most of us will never learn to drive. It's depressing but this is the world we were born into. This is the world we're all leaving early.
