Ryuu gave us a short tour of the castle-like school before we had to go to the sorting ceremony. Katara, Toph and I could hardly wait.
Ryuu told us that you were sorted based on your personality. Fire is power, earth is substance, air is freedom and water is change. Although most people are given the element in which they come from, other people's personality differs from that which is taught to them.
After the tour, Ryuu told us that it was time to enter the Great Hall. All of us cheered in excitement. Katara turned to me with a huge smile on her face. "This is it, Aang! We get to see what element we can bend!"
While following Ryuu, I thought more about Toph. She had explained to Katara and I how she was born blind and how people always treated her like she couldn't take care of herself. I admired her courage and how strong she was. Toph would make a good earthbender. We walked silently through the doors to the Great Hall and were astonished to find what was inside. Four large tables made up the majority of the room. Each was for a specific element and everyone at the table was dressed in the corresponding colors.
Ryuu told us to make a horizontal line going in front of the podium at the front of the room. There stood the headmaster, Avatar Roku. The headmaster was only at the school for important occasions, such as deciding the elements for new students as well as keeping an eye out for the new Avatar. Once the new Avatar was found, Avatar Roku would train him/her until he felt they were ready. Then the previous Avatar would pass away in his sleep and the new one could begin.
Avatar Roku smiled at us. "Welcome new students of Hosriks. When I call your name, you will come forth, I shall present the elements to you and you will be sorted into your nations. Katara."
Katara took a deep breath beside me and I gave her a reassuring smile. She walked up to stand in front of Avatar Roku who pulled a small silver tray out. On it, a bowl of water, a mound of earth, a match and a leaf. Roku presented the bowl of water to her first. Katara took it in her hands and moments later a small stream of water rose up from the bowl and swirled around midair in a tiny circle before falling back into the bowl. Roku smiled and placed the bowl back on its tray. He faced Katara to the front and held up her right hand. "Water Tribe!" He announced.
A chorus of cheers could be heard from the Water Tribe table as students stood up to clap and welcome their newest member. Katara gave me a warm smile and whispered 'good luck' before joining her new classmates.
"Toph." Toph carefully made her way up the stairs and Roku handed her a the bowl of water. Nothing happened. He then instructed her to cup her hands and he poured the small mound of dirt into them. Instantly, the mound of dirt came together to form a hard solid rock. Roku took the rock from Toph and placed it on the tray where it became a mound of dirt once more. "Earth Kingdom!" A chorus of cheers and shouts greeted Toph as she was guided by Ryuu to the Earth Kingdom table.
I knew it!
"Zuko." A boy with dark hair and a large scar over his eye made his way to the front now. Roku repeated the water and the earth to no avail. He then instructed the boy to pick up the match and hold it. Instantly, the match caught fire. "Fire Nation!"
I was beginning to worry. What if I didn't get Air Nomads? I wouldn't be able to see Gyatso anymore. The very thought made my eyes tear up slightly. I was so lost in my thoughts that I did not hear my name get called.
"Aang?" Roku repeated. I swallowed thickly and slowly walked up to the front. I stood there with my hands out, waiting to hold the bowl of water, when something happened. A stream of water came out of the bowl, the leaf floated up into the air and began swirling around me with the water. The wind from the leaf picked up small particles of the dirt and brought them with it. Then the match lit by itself and a small stream of fire was now making its way around me. I heard the students and teachers behind me, gasp in awe. I was in awe myself. After a minute the elements around me went back to their places and Roku gave me a small smile. He turned me to face the front.
"All hail Avatar Aang." I felt my knees go weak. Avatar? I'M the Avatar? Me?! All at once every student and teacher stood up from their seat and bowed to me. I felt like I couldn't breathe. No way this was happening, no way was I the Avatar.
