Jess put down her small dumbbell weights as her music cut off to allow a phone call to come through. She huffed and moved across the living room to retrieve her phone. It was Bo facetiming her.
Jess sighed, wishing she wasn't sweaty and flushed, but she picked up her phone and answered anyway. "Hey."
"Hey, babe," Bo said with a smile. His smile widened as he took in her appearance. "What're you up to?"
She brushed her baby hairs back and smirked. "Just finishing a workout. What're you doing? Are you still at the field?"
Based on his background, he appeared to be in the Roger's Centre clubhouse somewhere. His damp hair fell over his shoulders, telling Jess he'd also just finished a workout or something similar.
"Just got done with the trainer," he said, voice echoing off the halls. He moved into the locker room, and Jess heard other people talking in the background. "How fast can you be ready?"
"What?" Jess asked, laughing lightly. "Ready for what?"
Bo just grinned. "How fast?"
"Um. Give me half an hour to shower?" she asked.
"Okay. I'll be there in half an hour then," he said.
Jess opened her mouth, but was cut off by someone in the background.
"Is that Pebble?" Vladdy exclaimed.
Bo chuckled. "Yeah." He angled his phone towards Vladdy, who was tying his cleats on a bench.
"Hey," Jess said, giving a little wave.
"Hey," Vladdy replied. "How're you?"
"Good." Jess moved around the living room and went to her bedroom. "But Bo's given me a time limit, so now I have to panic-get-ready."
Vladdy laughed and Bo chuckled behind the phone.
"Relax, ba—" Bo cut off. "Stoner. If you're not ready, I can wait."
Jess felt her cheeks warm, but luckily they'd already been pink from her workout.
Though she and Bo had been dating now for about a month, there were still several guys on the team who didn't know. Well, most of the guys, really. A lot of them just assumed she and Bo were still "just friends" as they'd so often insisted beforehand. Some of the guys had caught them being coupley—Lourdes had walked in on them kissing last week and had practically died of laughter upon seeing their embarrassed faces. But Vladdy had never found out, or at least he'd never said anything.
"Where you going?" Vladdy asked. He got up and pulled his dreads back into a ponytail.
"Don't know," Jess said. She grabbed a few things from her dresser.
"It's a surprise," Bo replied.
Vladdy smirked. "Have fun."
Jess smiled at him. "Thanks. I gotta go if I'm going to be ready."
Vladdy waved and walked off and Bo angled the phone back at him. "You don't have to dress fancy," Bo told her as she walked into the bathroom. "Just wear something comfy."
"Okay," she said, narrowing her eyes. "And, pray tell, what might the occasion be?"
"No occasion," Bo replied. He grabbed something out of frame—likely his bag.
Jess smiled widely. "Do you still have the spare key?"
"Yup."
"Okay, well, just let yourself in, then. I'll see you in a bit."
