You woke up with a start, an overwhelming feeling of anxiety bubbling up in your stomach. For a moment you couldn't place what made you wake up, until you heard the sharp knocking again.
You got out of your bed, slowly making your way to the front door of the small, empty, apartment.
You open the door, immediately snapping out of your sleepiness when you see a familiar blue-haired boy in a panic.
Without saying a word he rushes in and shuts the door behind him. Before you could react, Sal grabs onto you, hugging you so hard you think your ribs might crack.
"Sally, what-"
"It happened again. The nightmares are getting worse."
he whispers.
Your expression changes into one of concern, pulling him closer to your chest.
"Shit Sal, I'm so sorry. Come here."
You lead him into your bedroom, ushering him to sit with you. This is starting to become a regular occurrence; Sal showing up at your door in the late hours of the night, telling you about his nightmares, and eventually falling asleep in your bed while you stay up to make sure he's safe.
He always seemed so invincible to you, ghost hunting and all that. The fact he chose to be best friends with you, the loser boy of Addison Apartments, was a mystery to some people.
Over the past few months you've developed a crush on him, these nights just adding to it with the comforting long conversations.
Trying to push those feelings aside, you place your hand on the side of Sal's prosthetic, having him face you.
"Sal, you're safe here, nothing can hurt you. Can you tell me what happened?"
His breathing slowed, calming down at the sight of you, reassuring him that this isn't another nightmare.
He starts his explanation at a small whisper,
" I just.. I had a dream that you.. that you were dead. I had to bury you. Your ghost came back to me, telling me that it was my fault. I had no choice. I killed you."
Tears welled up in his bright blue eyes, illuminated by the moonlight from your window.
"Sally, I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere, I'm safe, I'm okay. It was just a dream."
You reply calmly, moving your hands onto his, gripping them tightly, as if he'd disappear if you let go.
"It just seemed so real.."
"I know, I know. I know you Sal, you would never hurt anyone."
"But I-"
Sally started sobbing. He clung to your chest, you could feel him shaking with every breath. Your arms wrapped around him, one hand on his back and one stroking his hair.
The two of you stayed like this for a while until he calmed down enough to pull away, reaching under his prosthetic to wipe his eyes.
"You know you don't have to wear that around me Sally, I'd never judge you. Ever."
you stated, making him look up at you.
"I just.. don't know if you'd like what you saw."
"What you look like would never change the fact that I love you"
You startled yourself with that last part a bit. Oops, didn't mean to expose your huge crush on him like that, especially now.
You saw Sal's eyes widen a bit.
" You- you love me??"
he stuttered out, you could hear the excitement in his voice.
You averted your eyes out of embarrassment and started rambling.
"Um i mean- i mean yeah, you're the coolest guy i've ever met, your so sweet and caring, you always help anyone you can, not to mention you're a total nerd which is adorable- shit sorry this is weird i should probably shut-"
You were cut off by Sal's lips meeting yours.
HOLY SHIT!!!!! HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT I THOUGHT HE DIDN'T LIKE GUYS HOLY SHIT HOLY SH-
Sally pulled away, looking at the ground.
"I think you're pretty cool too."
You could see his pale, scarred face turning a light shade of red. You didn't even notice he took his prosthetic off, but you couldn't stop staring at him, your mouth not forming words.
"Wow. you're.. you're really pretty." was all you could say, making him get all flustered again.
" Jeez, stop being so cheesy."
"Am not! I'm offended, sally face.." you pouted, flopping down on your bed, facing away from him.
You could feel the mattress shift as he lay next to you, wrapping his arms around your waist, pulling you close to him.
"It was cute though..."
Pulling you legs closer up to your chest, you lace your fingers between his to comfort him.
"You ready to try falling back asleep?" you ask.
"Yeah.. I think it'll be easier this time since i'm with you."
You smiled, drifting asleep in your "best friend"'s embrace.
