The next morning Max behaved as though nothing was wrong. She made her usual snarky jokes, casually going through her day. I was dying to ask who Adler was, but I knew that the answer would land me in a situation that I didn't want to be in. I tried to ignore the situation as much as possible. I only had 49 days left, it would be crazy to get wrapped up into a dangerous situation, especially when I was about to get out. I turned back to scrubbing the floor, hoping that the strong chemicals would help in distracting me from my thoughts.
...
Max and I sat silently, picking away our dinner. She kept her eyes glued to her plate and I had mine glued to anywhere but her. She seemed a bit off, maybe she had picked up on my prying ears from the night before. I was too nervous to speak. I hoped that my mind would've been as silent as I was. To my dismay, it wasn't.
Adler. Adler. Adler.
The name rung out in my head.
Adler. Adler. Adler.
It wasn't a name of any significance until that moment.
Who is Adler?
Max gasped, dropping her fork to her plate. It wasn't until I felt her eyes searing into my head that I knew, I had spoken out loud. I bit my tongue, internally reprimanding myself. I swore that I wasn't going to get involved. Way to go Sam.
"What did you say?" Max's voice sounded like a bunch of knifes. Sharp and dangerous. I could practically feel it's sharp blade pressing at my neck. I forced down the food that I had left in my mouth. I knew that if I didn't react appropriately, the image of the knives would soon become my reality.
"Hmmm?" I looked up at her, keeping my face as still as possible. "What?" I tried to feign ignorance. But she didn't buy it.
"What did you say?" She asked again, her grip on her steak knife getting tighter. Time started to slow down, but move faster than it had ever before. I was scrambling in every direction, searching my mind for an answer. Any answer. None came. But my silence was enough of an answer for her. It didn't take a moment of hesitation, Max jumped up.
So much for 49 days.
