Consciousness slowly pulled into me as I opened my eyes to an unfamiliar room. I knew I was in the little cottage near the packhouse owing to the bareness of the room and the peculiar green colour of the walls. It was much closer to Vesna's garden than the room I currently reside in. I close my eyes and rub my temples. My ears are ringing, and I'm suffering from a migraine-like throbbing pain.
I take a few long breaths and open my eyes again. I look out the window at the darkening sky. I grumble in frustration to myself. It's already dark outside! I slept the entire day through! I vaguely recall the sun being at the top of my head; it had to be midday when I fainted. I sigh. To make up for today, I'll need to put in twice as much effort tomorrow. I feel horrible for Vesna. She's already found me unconscious a few times, and I passed out in front of her today! My throat felt like a parched desert, and I noticed a glass of water on the bedside table. I reached for the drink slowly, and just lifting my arm wrenched my sore muscles. My suffering was cut short as a person entered. As that fading enticing scent hit my nostrils, my stomach did a backflip. As I strained to recognise the form in the dark, they proceeded towards the side table. They scooped up the glass and lit the lamp on the side table. A surge of disappointment washed over me as the warm light lit Vesna's delicate features. What was I expecting? Stupid, stupid heart!
Vesna helped me in getting up and adjust a pillow behind me to lean on. My parched throat was soothed as I took a few gulps of the cold water. Closing my eyes, I sighed with relief and stretched my hand to place the glass back. She drew a chair and sat next to me.
"This is not safe for you, Nesta!" Vesna's furious voice rang quietly as she snatched the glass from my grasp and placed it. She looked at me with a scowl. As she held my hands in hers, her face softened with affection and concern.
"This is the fourth time since you have been here!"
I turned away from her and glanced down. My nerves are slowly kicking in making me anxious. She is aware of the issue but she has not attempted to discuss it since she knows I do not want to. She is aware of my discomfort. I could hear Vesna sigh as her grip on my hand tightened.
"You slept for three days, Nesta!"
"Three days!" As those words exited her mouth, my lips parted in disbelief. This is the longest time I've ever slept through! But, then again, I went through the most agonising pain this time.
"Think about your pup, dragi!" (dear) Her voice is soft and full of concern. I look down and chew on my bottom lip once again. What am I to do? He's not going to stop banging his Luna even if I asked him to! Vesna's grip on my hand tightens, bringing me back from my path of thoughts. She gulped; her lips parched.
"I have informed the Alpha about what happened to you." The moment those words left her lips I felt my world stop. My eyes widened and my heartbeat quickened up. Did she tell him? I could feel the blood drain off of my face immediately when her words sunk in. What will he do now that he knows? Will he throw me out? Anxiety crept up my spine as I tried to yank my hand out of her hold but she didn't let go.
"Ćera! This is wrong! You are suffering way too much. How many more times will you suffer this way every time they mate? How many bruises can your body take? How many more times will I have to find you unconscious on the floor because of this? I can't bear to see the pain in your pretty eyes anymore, ćera." Vesna's warm hand softly stroked my head as her face softened. "If not for yourself, think about your pup. He is suffering every bit along with you!"
Vesna's soft, kind and motherly words sought after my tears and I could feel the tears threatening to spill. But I did my best to hold them back. I had vowed myself to never cry again, at least not in front of anyone. I have done that way too many times from that day alone. I just might have cried a year's worth of tears by now. Even if my heart was breaking, again and again, I will not cry!
