Chapter Eight: Capital Calls

Zia instinctively knew that her friend was up to no good. The anxious stirring of sugar scraping the bottom of her teacup gave away her friend's unease. She looked at Lily, who sat twiddling her golden spoon furiously. Zia took a nibble of her favorite honeyed biscuits.

"Lily...what is it...clearly something is making you upset". Lily looked at Zia and pouted.

"Zia, I think we should go to the capital."

"We?" Zia questioned incredulously. Lily reached across the table and grasped her hands.

"Zia pleaaase! I was planning to go to the Capital soon, but it would be even better if you came with me!"

Zia sighed, her heart already uneasy at thinking of what potential threats were in the Capital for Lily once she debuted this season.

"Must we go this year? What if we hold off a year or three" Zia countered, hoping her friend could be swayed, knowing it would never work with the restless energy Lily had. Her white hair slipped out of its coil on her head to further frame her face. Lily is a devastating beauty, only hindered by her life in the countryside. Zia felt that once Lily had a taste of all the Capital would offer her, she might be swept into a nefarious scheme or seduced by someone who could ruin her life. Worse, Lily would fall in love with someone who could endanger her life. Zia looked away from her friend's pleading eyes.

"Zia I can't spend my whole life in the countryside, nothing happens here and all the prospects are people I grew up with... it's like dating a family member that's how small this town is" Lily argued. Her hand grasped Zia's tightly.

"Zia imagine an adventure for love with me" Lily pleaded. A large sigh escaped Zia's chest. She nodded her consent, and Lily squealed and smiled from cheek to cheek.

"We will have the time of our lives! The fashion is better, the food, and all the people we will meet" She said dreamily. Her hand hovered over her chest, as she fake fainted. Zia chuckled at these antics. Lily began speaking on all the Capital would offer the two of them, but Zia knew that the fate of the original novel was lying in wait to coil its way around Lily.

"Lily if we go...can you promise me something," Zia asked softly. Lily stopped her exclamation and reached across again to hold both of Zia's hands.

"ANYTHING if it means we can go to the Capital for the season!" Lily smiled brightly as if Zia offered her the world.
