The days at university rolled on, with Prae and Alex both becoming more entrenched in their academic work. For Prae, her engineering projects were getting more complex, especially as the semester neared its critical midpoint. While she loved the challenges that engineering presented, the pressure had been steadily increasing. It was during one particularly difficult week that Prae realized she needed help—and Alex was the only person she trusted enough to ask.
It was late one evening in their dorm room. The warm glow of her desk lamp cast soft shadows over her engineering textbooks, diagrams, and scattered notes. Prae sat, staring at a complicated schematic she'd been working on for hours. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't seem to find the right solution to the problem.
Frustration was starting to bubble up inside her, but she resisted the urge to give up. She knew that if she continued to push herself without asking for help, it would only get worse.
Just then, Alex walked in, looking tired but content after a long study session. He glanced over at Prae, noticing the strain on her face.
"Hey, how's it going?" Alex asked, walking over to her desk. "You look like you've been at it for a while."
Prae sighed, running her fingers through her hair. "It's been rough. This project is killing me. I can't figure out this one part of the design. I've tried everything, but nothing's working."
Alex leaned down to take a closer look at the schematic spread out on her desk. Although geology and engineering were different fields, Alex had always been fascinated by how things worked, and he often helped Prae with brainstorming ideas, even if he didn't always know the technical details.
"Maybe I can help," Alex said, pulling up a chair next to her. "Tell me what's giving you trouble."
Prae hesitated for a moment. She had always prided herself on being independent, especially when it came to her engineering work. But Alex had been so supportive, and she knew he wouldn't judge her for needing help.
"Okay," she said, taking a deep breath. "It's this circuit design. I'm trying to figure out how to optimize the power flow, but the calculations aren't adding up. I've gone over the theory, but I think I'm missing something obvious."
Alex nodded thoughtfully as he listened. "Alright, let's take a step back. Walk me through the process—sometimes explaining it out loud helps you see things differently."
Prae began to explain her thought process, carefully outlining each step she had taken and the decisions she had made along the way. As she spoke, Alex listened intently, occasionally asking questions that prompted her to think more critically about her approach.
After about twenty minutes, Prae suddenly paused, her eyes widening. "Wait... I think I've been overcomplicating it! The solution might be simpler than I thought. Maybe I need to adjust the resistance values instead of trying to redesign the whole circuit."
Alex smiled, seeing the light of realization in her eyes. "See? Sometimes all you need is to talk it through. You already had the answer—you just needed a different perspective."
Prae couldn't help but smile back, a wave of relief washing over her. "You're right. Thank you, Alex. I was so stuck in my own head, I couldn't see the obvious solution."
She leaned over and gave him a quick, grateful kiss on the cheek. "You've saved me from hours of frustration. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Alex chuckled, feeling both proud and happy that he could help. "You'd figure it out eventually—I'm just here to speed up the process."
They spent the next hour working together, with Prae making adjustments to her design and Alex providing moral support and encouragement. By the end of the night, Prae had a solid plan in place, and she felt more confident than she had in days.
As they both settled in to relax, Prae turned to Alex and said, "You know, asking for help isn't something I'm used to, but I'm glad I asked you. You always know how to keep me grounded."
Alex smiled warmly. "We're a team, Prae. I've asked you for help more times than I can count. It's only fair that you do the same."
Prae nodded, feeling a sense of comfort in his words. She knew that with Alex by her side, no challenge was too great. The strength of their relationship wasn't just in the romantic moments, but in the way they supported each other through life's difficulties. And in that, they found their greatest strength.
