The days at university had become more demanding as deadlines loomed and final exams approached. Both Prae and Alex were caught up in their academic responsibilities, with Prae spending long hours working on her engineering projects and Alex deeply immersed in his geology research. Their once regular moments of quiet connection were becoming increasingly rare, and Prae found herself missing the simple joy of being with Alex.
It had been almost a week since they'd spent any real time together—no late-night talks, no study breaks, and definitely no intimate moments like the one they'd shared just a few weeks ago. Though they still exchanged texts and brief calls, it wasn't enough for Prae. She missed him, and the more she thought about it, the more the ache of his absence grew.
One evening, as she sat at her desk working on a project, Prae's thoughts kept drifting back to Alex. She glanced at her phone, her finger hovering over his name in her contacts. She wanted to call him, to hear his voice, but something held her back. She didn't want to disturb him if he was busy, and part of her wondered if she was being too needy. But as the minutes passed, she realized that holding back her feelings wasn't the answer. She missed him, and she needed to tell him.
Taking a deep breath, Prae tapped the call button.
The phone rang a few times before Alex picked up. His voice was warm but tired, a familiar tone that made Prae's heart ache even more.
"Hey, sweetie," he said softly. "How's your day been?"
"Busy," Prae replied, her voice quiet. "I've been working on my project all day. What about you?"
"Same here," Alex sighed. "I've been at the lab, trying to finish my research paper. It's been a long day."
There was a brief pause, and Prae hesitated before speaking again. She didn't want to unload her emotions on him when he was clearly exhausted, but she couldn't keep it inside any longer.
"I miss you," she said softly, the words tumbling out before she could stop them.
Alex was quiet for a moment, and Prae worried that maybe she'd caught him off guard. But then he spoke, his voice full of warmth and understanding.
"I miss you too, Prae. So much. It's been hard not seeing you, especially with everything going on."
Prae felt a wave of relief wash over her. Hearing him say those words made her feel less alone in her feelings. "I know we're both busy, but I just... I feel like I haven't had time with you lately, and I miss the little things, you know? Just talking, laughing, spending time together."
Alex let out a small, wistful laugh. "I know exactly what you mean. I've been thinking about that too. I miss our walks, our late-night talks... I miss all of it."
Prae smiled, her heart swelling with affection. "I've been thinking—maybe we can take a break tomorrow, even if it's just for an hour or two. We could grab coffee or take a walk around campus, just to catch up and spend time together."
Alex didn't hesitate. "I'd love that. Let's do it. We need a break from all this work anyway, and I'd rather spend that time with you."
Prae's heart fluttered at his words, and she felt a sense of excitement building inside her. She could already picture it—just the two of them, walking hand in hand, talking about everything and nothing, like they used to. It was a simple plan, but it was exactly what she needed.
"Okay," she said, her voice light with anticipation. "Tomorrow then. I can't wait."
They talked for a few more minutes, exchanging updates on their work and making plans for the next day. When they finally hung up, Prae felt lighter, as though a weight had been lifted off her chest. She hadn't realized just how much she had been missing Alex until she said it out loud. Now, she felt hopeful and excited for their time together.
The next day, Prae couldn't help but smile as she walked toward the campus café where she and Alex had agreed to meet. It was a sunny afternoon, the perfect weather for a stroll after their coffee. She spotted Alex waiting by the entrance, his face lighting up when he saw her.
"Hey, you," he said, pulling her into a warm hug. "It's so good to see you."
Prae hugged him back, feeling the familiar comfort of his embrace. "I've missed you so much," she whispered into his chest.
"I've missed you too," Alex murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "I didn't realize how much until now."
They grabbed their coffees and took a walk around campus, talking and laughing like they hadn't in weeks. It was as if the stress of their academic lives faded into the background for a little while, leaving just the two of them and the easy flow of conversation.
As they walked, Prae felt the tension that had been building inside her melt away. She realized that no matter how busy they got, no matter how much work they had, they needed moments like this to reconnect and remind each other of what truly mattered—their relationship.
"I'm so glad we did this," Prae said, squeezing Alex's hand as they walked along a quiet path lined with trees. "I didn't realize how much I needed it."
Alex smiled, his hand warm in hers. "Me too. We should make time for this more often. Even if it's just a short break, it makes all the difference."
Prae nodded in agreement, feeling a deep sense of contentment. Being with Alex, even for just a few hours, had filled the gap she had been feeling all week. They may have been busy, but they always made time for each other when it mattered most.
And in that moment, Prae knew that no matter how hectic life became, their love would always find a way to bring them back together.
