Introduction

Summer 1997

Gently pulling out the wires being extra carful not to accidentally shock herself, the 12 year old girl stared at the coloured wires deep in thought. Trying to play back the steps her mother repeated to her numerous times in her mind, she drew in a long breath and held it as she began fiddling with the wires.

"Today, Y/n." Her mother whined like a child, throwing her head back against the seat of the car. "We don't have all fucking day."

Y/n exhaled loudly in clear frustration, dropping the wires she looked up at her mom.

"I'm doing everything you told me to but it's not working," she huffed, this was probably the thousandth time her mother had nagged her about how long she was taking and Y/n was ready to call it quits.

"It's cause you're thinking so damn hard." Her mother spat in response, raising her hand she hit Y/n in the back of her head. "Always overthinking things like just do what I told you."

"Huh?? I literally just told you I am??" Y/n cringed at the throbbing pain, raising her hand to caress the poor area of her head that'd been struck.

"Stop talking back," Y/n flinched when her mother raised her hand again, thinking she was going to hit her again. Seeing the little girl flinch the woman chuckled, taking Y/n's much smaller hands into her slender fingers.

"Here, let me help you since you wanna act like a big baby."

Y/n glanced up at her mom before shifting her gaze back down to the wires, watching carefully as her mother helped her hotwire the car.

As soon as the young girl heard the engine come to life a smile spread across her face.

"See wasn't that bad was---Ohhhh fuck," Hearing the octave in her mothers voice drop Y/n curiously looked up at her with furrowed brows. Her mother was no longer looking down at her but now ahead at something or someone through the windshield.

Y/n's jaw slacked when she seen a man running out of the breakfast diner they were just seated in.

"Get the fuck out of my car!!"

Y/n spaced out for a moment, frozen like a dear in headlights realizing she'd been caught redhanded. She was only pulled from her thoughts feeling her mothers long acrylic nails dig into her shoulder blades.

"The fuck are you waiting for move!!" The older woman spat, her words coming out less as a question but more of a statement. Yanking her daughter in her direction Y/n then understood she was trying to switch seats.

She groaned in discomfort as her much taller mother had to squeeze in front of her to get into the drivers seat which left her smooshed against the leather uncomfortably as she shifted her body to where her mother previously sat; her mothers cheap perfume rubbing against her face.

The woman wasted no time, her fingers wrapping around the gear shift of the car and putting it in reverse to back out of the parking spot.

"Stop--!!"

The man's cries were in vain, as the woman geared the car into drive Y/n felt a suddenly rush of adrenaline pumping through her body.

Her mother recklessly drove out of the parking lot and into the main roads, Y/n immediately putting on her seatbelt remembering how her mother acted as if she was invincible whenever she was behind the wheel.

"Mom I did it!" The little girl boasted as the car rolled to a stop reaching a red light, looking up to her mother seeking her praise.

Her mother's hair was horribly damaged, bleached an unhealthy amount of times. The grown out dye exposed her natural h/c roots as her hair was pulled back into a messy bun. Despite it literally being summer she wore a cropped stained beige fur coat with a blank tank top underneath. Her top was tucked into dark blue denim jeans shorts that she wore with fishnet stockings and boots.

Y/n watched her mother pulled a pack of cigarettes out from her bra, the woman fumbling with the lighter as she struggled to light the cancer stick.

"Yeah, good job kid." Her mother turned to face her for only a brief second, flashing her a tight lipped smile before bringing her attention back to the road as the light turned green. Y/n's smile faltered as she looked down to her lap instead, beginning to fidget with her fingers as her mother drove god-knows where.

After about 20 minutes the car was parked up, the young girl looked around completely unfamiliar with her surroundings.

"Come,"

Listening obediently to her mother Y/n followed her out of the car without objections. She held onto her mothers hand as they approached three men, Y/n only looked up at the intimidating men for a second before keeping her head down.
