VII. Smoking with Shane

A/N: This one is a request, but the prompt intrigued me so much that I had to give it a shot! Enjoy! (We are 🍃 friendly here!)

The farmer leaned against the side of the silo, the bricks rough against her skin. It was the dead of summer, and she was sticky from the humidity, her hair plastered to her forehead. It was evening, though, and beginning to cool down; there was a nice breeze across the farm as she gazed at all the crops she'd planted.

She dug through her pocket and pulled out the joint she'd been saving. She deserved this after a hard day of work, right?

Sparking up, she let her head fall back against the silo. The smoke that billowed from the end of the joint stunk, but she plucked it between her lips anyway.

"Sparking up on the job?" A voice asked from behind her, nearly causing her to drop the joint.

Turning to see Shane, she rolled her eyes. "You scared me. Thought you were the mayor or somethin'."

"Not the mayor, just a concerned citizen," Shane leaned down to be at face-level with the woman. When she blushed, he smiled. "You got caught, now pay the tax."

"Tax?"

Shane swiped the joint from between her fingertips and took a puff. "The rule is, if you get caught with it, you gotta share."

The farmer stared at Shane with wide eyes. Had he really just done that? She knew he was a drinker, but she'd never heard of anyone smoking marijuana in Pelican Town. Maybe he picked it up from his visits to the city, or going to the Tunnelers games?

Whatever it was, she liked it.

"Well, don't let it burn out! Give it back!" The farmer took the joint from Shane and took another drag- the burn in her lungs felt strangely good, along with the rush to her head. "Do you wanna stay and share it?"

Shane simply settled down beside her. "So, is this what you're growing out here? Working all those long hours in the fields, tending to your pot plants?"

"No, Shane..."

"Damn. That would've been cool."

"Of course, you would think so," she teased, taking another drag from the joint. Passing it to Shane, she watched as he inhaled, followed by a coughing fit. Giggling, she tried to regain her composure. "Been a while since you've smoked, huh?"

Shane shook his head, taking in the way the sunlight hit the top of her head, the golden rays bouncing off her hair. Of course, he was high, but that didn't make her any less beautiful. "A few weeks, maybe. At the last Tunneler's game."

Bingo!

The farmer let her head fall against Shane's shoulder as she took another puff. "You're lucky I rolled an extendo." His JojaMart hoodie was soft against her cheek, and she wanted nothing more than to wrap up in it and go to sleep. She'd always loved that hoodie, especially when he'd let her wear it.

Little did she know that he loved letting her wear it, too.

"You cold?" Shane noticed the goosebumps that arose on her arms with a gust of wind. But before she could even answer, the jacket was off and wrapped around her shoulders.

Shane began to giggle.

Giggle.

"What?" the farmer asked, her brows furrowed as she tried to figure out what was so damn funny. But as he continued to laugh, she found a smile spreading across her face. "What?"

Shane reached out and tucked his arm around the farmer, pulling her into the side of his body. "You just look so goofy in that hoodie. It's huge on you."

"You always loved the oversized look," she said, snuggling in closer. "I like that this has your name on it. People will know I'm yours."

Huh?

Shane nearly passed out. The farmer was his? The farmer was his!

"Of course," he murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. He took another drag off of the joint before putting it out on the bottom of his shoe. "I better get going. See you tomorrow?"

"Bright and early."

"Deal." Shane pushed himself to his feet and began to head towards Cindersap Forest, leaving the farmer all bundled up, already missing his warmth.
