We get to the ilu and stand waist deep in the water. Ao'nung starts calling the ilu to us. I call Mira over to me and get on her. I stay sitting on Mira next to everyone.
"These are ilu. If you want to live here, you have to ride." Ao'nung tells them, gesturing to the ilu around him.
We all split up into partners to teach the Sully's how to ride the ilu. Ao'nung goes with Tuktirey, Tsireya takes Lo'ak, and Rotxo goes with Kiri. That leaves me to teach Neteyam.
I bring Neteyam to the ilu he is going to bond with and help him on.
"Make the tsaheylu." I say grabbing the queue of the ilu. I gently hand it to Neteyam so he can connect to it.
"This ilu is male. His name is Rata. He is very gentle and sweet." I smile to Neteyam. "You shouldn't have any problems riding with him."
As Neteyam gets situated on Rata, I look over at Rotxo helping Kiri. He smiles at her and they laugh about something. I feel the jealousy coursing through my veins and I decide to look away before I get angry.
I bring my attention back to Neteyam, helping put his body in the right position to ride smoothly through the water.
"Put your hand on this handle. Bring your legs back and lean forward some." I grab his hand and set it on the handle. He sits there, not moving. It's like he froze from seeing something scary. I look to see what he is looking at and notice he is staring at my fingers.
I pull my hand back and put my hands behind my back. I clear my throat and tell him to go ahead and try riding.
Neteyam just looks away awkwardly. He slowly starts moving forward on the ilu.
Soon, Neteyam speeds up. He gets a smile on his face and starts to become a little cocky. He rides faster and faster, and decides to try a jump.
He pushed through the water and shot back up into the air. Ayn'at watched as Neteyam flew through the air, before smacking into the water.
He forgot to correct his posture before landing the jump, so he got thrown off the ilu. He shot back underwater from the pressure of the water flowing the opposite way of him.
Nat stood up from looking under the waves, covering her mouth with her four-fingered hand, hiding her laughter.
Neteyam swam back to the shallow part of the water, slightly embarrassed from the fall. But when he saw Ayn'at laughing, he smiled. He was happy the awkward feeling from the moment before was gone.
