When we returned to Emile's house, I had full control over when I transformed. By now my boss has fired me I was sure of it. But after all that has happened, I honestly didn't care anymore. Diane and Kayne left earlier, and I was told to pack up. I decided to take one last look around the house.
As I wandered the halls, not a person was in sight. One sound, in particular, caught my attention, I could hear Emile typing in the living room. I stood in the doorway watching him, I glanced at the door that started it all. I wondered what else might be found inside that basement.
"What are you up to?" I asked Emile entering the room, he flinched slightly at the sudden sound of someone else. Even after the week, we had he was unfamiliar with having someone in the house. He was also a bit on edge, I was unsure why.
"A bit of research," he said, he didn't look up from his laptop which illuminated his face. He sat in the dark living room alone, not a single butler was in sight.
"About what?" I asked as I sat on the new couch. He got the same furniture he had before, such a bore. Emile definitely did not like change.
"I have to admit that week was the craziest thing that has ever happened to me," he said, he sounded sad. He seemed to be searching for something and I could tell that wasn't the end of it.
"But?" I questioned knowing he wasn't finished talking.
"But I didn't want it to end. It was nice to have company, to have an adventure. I know it wasn't the best for you but I wish it didn't have to end" he replied. He turned to face me, his face was still illuminated by his laptop. I could see him just fine, my senses were fine-tuned for the darkness.
"Maybe it doesn't," I said as I stood up, "who knows what other mysteries dad's library holds? Maybe that adventure doesn't have to end," I said as I closed his laptop.
"So, you're not leaving? You wanna actively seek out a new adventure?" He said excitedly.
"Hell yeah! After what we just went through id be more than happy to drop my life to go on adventures"
He stared at me before moving his laptop aside and standing up. "There might be something worth checking out. It could be fun I suppose"
"That's the spirit!" Who says life has to be boring? Who says you can only have one adventure?
"I could buy an RV and we could head out on the open road," Emile said as we headed into the basement.
"Sure, whatever works for you"
His hand grazed across the books on the shelf. I looked down to find the damaged circle below us. To think a week ago I had gotten stuck and that was how it all started.
"Some of these are just urban legends," he said flipping through the pages of a thick book. "I mean come on big foot? That's so cliche" he rolled his eyes dramatically at me.
"Emile, i am a rat man. Anything is possible" I said smiling at him.
The rest of the night we wandered the house sharing theories and ideas about where to go first. The clean house suddenly no longer felt so lonely.
