I stand in customs getting more impatient by the minute. Apparently, you aren't allowed to bring weapons in your carry-on. What happens if a dangerous animal is on the plane, have you not seen "Snakes on a Plane"? You would think my brother Lucas would mention that considering he went to the exact same training camp 2 years ago when he was in grade 10.
"Charlie Wells?" A customs officer says.
"Here." I reply in a bored voice.
"You have been sent to secondary for having," he looks at a list, "1 pocket knife, 3 hunting knives and, 2 daggers."
"You forgot the 6 arrow heads, shafts, and feathers."
He frowns at me, clearly not impressed.'
"So what are you going to do? Take them? Isn't that theft?"
"Not here it's not. Customs will seize them and you can get them back when you return to Canada."
I curse under my breath.
"Watch your language kid. Now fill out this form, and go catch your flight."
***
Fantastic, first my favourite daggers were seized and now my flight is delayed. This training camp won't wait forever. I paid, or umm, my parents paid a lot of money for this camp. Not to mention the plane ticket to Brazil.
"Hello?" A woman says.
"Hello..." I reply cautiously.
"Are your parents here?"
"No, I'm traveling alone."
This is getting weird. I think.
"Oh, ok."
"Well, it seems that we will be here awhile so let me introduce you to my husband John Lewis and my sons Josh and Axel." The woman says.
Oh, she's just trying to be nice to the young, innocent teen traveling alone who's flight got delayed. I don't need help, but this lady seems nice enough. Plus, she has kids so she can't be that bad.
"And your name is?" I say
"Oh yes, my name is Amelia but Amy is fine."
"I'm Charlie Wells." I reply.

"Flight 259 to Brazil prepare for boarding" a voice says over the loud speaker. Thank the gods, it's 9:00am we've been here all night.
"Where is your seat?" Amy asks.
"Back of the plane."
"Oh, we're in the middle." She responds.
"See you after the flight?"
"Ya!" Says Axel and Josh excitedly.
They're nice little kids, so full of energy. They remind me of myself a a kid, especially Josh.

"Hello, this is your Pilot speaking. The flight will take approximately seven and a half hours but may be shorter depending on weather conditions. This is a direct flight from Toronto Pearson International Airport in to Teresina International Airport. It is about 22°C in Brazil right now and 13°C here in Toronto. Bonjour, ceci est votre pilote qui vous parle..."
I stop listening and decide to rest for awhile. This will be a long flight.
***
I wake to the plane shaking and the seatbelt sign suddenly turning on.
"Everyone please return to you seats. Remain calm, we are just experiencing some turbulence." The Captain's voice says over the speakers. Is it just me, or does he sound nervous.
I buckle up my seatbelt and move even farther towards the back of the plane taking out my leather jacket. Once there, I put on my seatbelt and drape the jacket over my body, suddenly, a woman screams;
"LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!"
I do and wish immediately that I hadn't. The Earth was rushing towards me as the glow of flames lit up my face.
"BRACE FOR IMPACT!" A flight attendant says.
I burrow under my jacket and brace myself.
