Two amber eyes poked out of the bush, gazing out into the clearing. Her ears pricked up as the rustle of the wind brushed up against her fur. The moonlight poured through the canopy of leaves up above, the only light for miles. As she stalked across the wet grass, her paws stained red. She could feel her pack, several feet behind her, waiting for her command. A tree, taller than anything the wolf had seen before, reached for the heavens. Something moved out of the brush, piercing the auburn sky with its silhouette. The movement caused the wolf's fear to spike, and it ran into the brush.
Unknown to anyone but a lone wolf and perhaps her pack, a girl began to wake. ... And a voice rose from within the woods behind her.
"Why, ... hello"

Toni had always been paranoid. Whether that particular trait evolved from her interesting childhood, or the friends she had made since, she didn't know. What she did know was that one of her closest friends was missing.
It hadn't always been like this. God, she had practically taken her two friends under her wing. Ever since they had come to her doorstep, Zuri covered in blood, unconscious, she had taken care of them. She recalled her thoughts, conflicting against her common sense and her..well, morality was one way of putting it. She knew both of them like an open book, could turn their pages and play with the binding. Or so she'd thought. Ok, no. Toni backtracked. That's unfair and a tad bit dramatic. Still.
In the last few months, Ellie had seemed distant, unhinged, if she wanted to stretch, but...that? She had run away in the middle of the night, after claiming to have these visions. Zuri and her had both agreed that it was crazy, god, fucking impossible.
Toni's jumbled thoughts twisted like a knot, until she didn't know what to think. Being paranoid won't help Ellie. She reminded herself. You need to think clearly. Ever since the visions, it was quite clear her friend had needed help, but...ugh.
Toni was supposed to be the smart one, the one who always knew what to do when something bad happened. She was supposed to be cool and collected, not all horrified and freaked out.
She had to be honest — no. This isn't your fault. But if it wasn't her fault, then who was to blame?
They were lounging on Toni's bed, a twin crown marked panel mattress flanked with fluffy bedspreads and battered faux fur pillows. The girls were hunched over the bed; Toni hadn't bothered to leave the warmth of her covers. The room was painted honey yellow, which seemed too bright for the current mood. They had left the two windows open, relaxing in the last of the day's comfortable September sun.
As both girls sat in silence, pondering over their own thoughts, Toni's mind continued to warp in an endless circle, until—
"Hey" Zuri's eyes were bright with fear, and her typically dark skin was paler with worry, but her voice remained smooth.
Zuri had always been close with Ellie, and it shook Toni to see her like this. She wrapped her arms around her pillow, afraid to say anything. Hesitant, Toni reached out her hand. Zuri took hold of it, pressing it between both of hers. A tear slid down her cheek, but when she spoke, it was just as steady as the first time.
"Ellie will be alright" She said it so confidently, as though if the words came out steady enough it would be true.
"How do you..." Toni sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve before continuing. "She's been...off for weeks—" As much as she desperately tried, Toni failed to hide the note of worry from her voice. Embarrassed, she pulled the covers up to hide her flaming cheeks, covering in the blanket, she barely caught what her friend said next.
