chapter fourteen

Zane picked Ember's too cold body up and started walking towards Zev's house Strike following close behind they had defeated Silver but at what cost after a while of walking in silence  they made it Zev was on the porch when they walked over Zane with his tear stained cheeks and Strike still sniffling and Ember's body limp in his arms Zev's eyes grew wide "No! Is she okay?" Zane shook his head more tears rolling down his face Zev quietly got a shovel and dug a hole deep enough for her body and guided Strike inside saying "Let's give him some time" Zane got the rings out of his pocket and gently put it on Ember's ring finger he kissed her one last time and layed her gently in the grave he put the other ring on his ring finger and went inside he sat down at the table that not so long ago he had sat at with Ember and her crazy pancakes Zev and Strike walked in after Zev had finished healing her to see that Zane had cried himself to sleep at the table Zev grabbed a blanket and draped it over his shoulders and then said quietly "let's go get you some clean clothes to change into okay?" Strike nodded Zev let Strike sleep on the bed and had slept on the cot the next morning Zev made pancakes in honor of Ember Zane woke up to that familiar smell he almost expected to hear chatting from the kitchen but when he lifted his head he saw Zev bringing a stack of pancakes over Zane looked at the chair next to him that should've had Ember sitting there laughing and eating way to many pancakes Zev said "What do you want on them?" Zane said with a sweet but sorrowful smile "Strawberries and whipped cream" Strike came down the hallway wearing a shirt that was so big that she had used it as a nightgown she yawned "Are those pancakes?" "Yep what do you want on your's?" Zev said "chocolate chips!" Strike said excitedly then added "please" once they finished breakfast Strike said "do you want to come with me to pick some flowers for Ember?" Zane nodded
