Chapter 7

Alan was due in court at 9am Jake and Astrid had just arrived when Alan was being brought into the court. He got taken down to the hiding cells where he would stay until he was called up to see the judge. Jake and Astrid had submitted everything to the judge to go over. They had all the evidence there was no way Alan was walking out of the court on bail.  A few hours had passed and Alan had been called up to the courtroom. Jake and Astrid had taken their seats and Alan got brought into the courtroom by two officers.

The judge went over the evidence Alan tried to plead his case but the judge wasn't having any of it. He told Alan that he would be remanded until his court date which was set for a couple of weeks. Alan went mad slamming his hands down onto the bench,kicking and screaming. The two officers quickly grabbed hold of him and took him back down to his holding cell. As Alan was being dragged away he shouted something out.

Alan: tell Cleo I will be with her soon and that I love her very much.

Jake: come on Astrid let's get out of here and go tell the girls the good news

They both left the court and headed for the coffee shop. The morning rush had just finished so the girls were free to talk.

MC: Hey, how did the court case go?
Jake: He's been remanded so he ain't getting out any time soon
Astrid: He wasn't happy about it tho he started screaming and shouting
Cleo: I hope he rots in there after what he's done
Jake: Well after his outburst it's really not looking good for him

They carried on talking for a while until it was time for Jake and Astrid to leave, as they were leaving Richy was just coming in to grab a coffee.

Richy: Hey guys
MC: Hey Richy, you want your usual?
Richy: please, how did the court case go this morning?
Astrid: he got remanded
Richy: that's amazing news, Cleo I bet your relieved about that
Cleo: more than you know, I feel like I can finally breathe again
MC: it will all be over soon
Richy: When does the trail start?
Jake: Not for a couple weeks yet I will know in the next couple days when they set the date
Richy: if you guys need any help you know where I am
MC: thanks Richy
Astrid: You want to meet up tonight Richy?
Richy: I'd love to, why don't I pick you up from work say around 6pm?
Astrid: Perfect see you then
Jake: MC do you want to come over to mine tonight?
MC: yeah I'd love to
Jake: Cleo you are welcome to come
Cleo: thank you for the offer but I'm going to pass, I've got a bottle of wine and a bubble bath with ny name on it

Just as the others were leaving the lunch time rush was starting, everyone in duskwood loved coming in to grab a slice of cake and a coffee. As the weekend was coming up Jake had something special planned for MC he had bought a bottle of wine and had bought all the ingredients for making MCs favorite food. 

Cleo's POV

I feel like I can finally breathe again. It's like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. This nightmare will soon be over and Alan will remain behind bars. I can't help but think why he didn't just come forward and tell me. Why did he have to play these games with me? Why did he have to scare me like this? Did he really think that I would fall in love with him?

I can't help but wonder what if, what if things had been different I could have ended up with him. I could have ended up in his clutches and not be able to get out of the relationship. I have to be thankful that he's now safely behind bars.

Now that he's in prison I can focus on my new recipes that I want to make. I know everyone will love the rainbow cookies. I also have a new recipe for pyramid cakes. I even bought some small pyramid cake modules so I can get the right shape.

The next day Jake dropped MC off at the shop and kissed her goodbye, he told her he would come by later once he got the phone call about the court date. It felt like the longest day waiting for the call but around 2pm Jake's phone rang. The date had been set for 2 weeks from today as Jake put the phone down and it rang again. It was from the prison Alan was in hospital that he had been found in his cell beaten up.

Astrid and Jake rushed over to the hospital. Alan was lying in a bed and he had a swollen eye and a broken arm. It was clear why Alan had been beaten up all because he was an ex police officer in prison. He refused to pull some strings for a prison inmate to get him off some charges.

When Alan refused the inmate went mad and beat Alan up, he was later found by one of the prison guards. The inmate that had beaten him up had been arrested and taken for questioning.

The doctors told Jake and Astrid Alan will make a full recovery, his eye will be swollen for some time but he will regain the sign back in it. Alan will have to have his arm in a cast for 12 weeks. Astrid and Jake left the hospital and went back to the station; there wasn't much they could do at the hospital.

Astrid: Are we going to have to expect this all the time now?
Jake: He's an ex police officer, it inmates find out and it clearly hasn't taken long it is a possibility
Astrid: Does he really deserve all this?
Jake: I know what he's done is wrong I find myself not being able to answer that question
Astrid: I get it, I really do I guess we better tell the others
Jake: let's go round I told MC we would stop by and let them know what's happening

MC: What's going to happen now?
Astrid: Alan will be taken back to prison once his arm as been cast
Jake: He will be out into solitary confinement for a few days
Cleo: I don't know what to think about all this. Am I still safe?
Astrid: Don't worry Cleo you are more than safe he as two prison guards with him and one is handcuffed to him
Cleo: I somehow feel a little better now

While they were talking Jake got a phone call from the prison, Alan had somehow managed to escape from the hospital. Officers are out searching for him now he won't have gotten too far with his swollen eye and broken arm.

The colour drained from Jake's face as he knew he had to break the news to Cleo.
