Fostering A Surprise

MAYA POV

I've been helping David and Brian get ready to foster. They've been chosen to take on two brothers who's aunt has recently passed away. I'm not saying I'm an expert with fostering but I think the way I handled Alex at the beginning, was quite good. I've mostly helped them with the paperwork and helped them set up the bedrooms. They've invited me to be there when the brothers come to David's house, I'm more than happy to be there.

Today is the day that David and Brian take on the two brothers. Over the last two weeks, they've told Blake that he will be getting two brothers. He was slightly confused but I think he's slowly getting it, apparently he has been going to all of his classmates and announcing it. Carina currently has both Blake and Evie at home, just so that the boys can come into the house and feel a calmer energy than two toddlers running around.

With the doorbell going off, I can really see the excitement but panic on both father's faces. "It's okay guys, everything will be okay. Do you want me to open the door? Come on" I say to which I receive a nod and we stand up very quickly.

Opening the door, we are met with two boys who look really familiar, and their social worker.

"Come on Michael and Ezra, let's go in" The social worker says. Both boys nod, keeping their heads down as they enter the house.

"Right, so I need you to fill in a few different papers saying that you want the kids. I'll give you the files for the kids and we can go from there." The social worker says with a grin. "Oh, I'm Marie by the way. Which one of you is David and Brian? And what is your name if you don't mind?" Marie asks all of us. David and Brian both introduce each other before I say "Hi, I'm Maya Deluca-Bishop. I've been helping both David and Brian recently".

The paperwork and everything was fairly straight forward for David and Brian. Marie seems like a pretty good social worker; she's been really reassuring to both the boys and David and Brian. She left about an hour ago, the boys have been shown to their rooms and they're yet to leave them.

"Do you think they hate us? They haven't come back yet" David says anxiously.

"Dave, you don't know what they've been through. Let them get used to their surroundings, for god's sake" Brian says in an angry but hushed tone before turning around with the coffee he's just made for me. It's not as good as Carina's but you can't expect perfection from someone else that isn't her.

"H-hi, can I have some water please?" We heard from behind us. Both Michael and Ezra were there but it looked like Ezra was hiding behind Michael.

"Of course, do you want anything else? We have snacks here too" Brian replied, as soon as the snacks were mentioned, we could see the hopeful gaze Ezra gave Michael.

"Come on Ezra, what do you want? We have cookies and candy. Michael do you want anything?" David asked earning a small nod from both as they timidly started to make their way to us.

"Can I ask what you do?" Ezra asked quietly.

"Brian here works as a scientist, so he gets to do all of these crazy experiments! Sadly, I just crunch numbers all day" David exaggerates to Ezra.

"Wow, what do you specialise in? Please say you're not a geologist, that's the stupidest science out there!" Ezra stated to Brian, we all start to smile at the small interaction.

"What do you do? I recognise you" Michael said towards me

"I'm a fire chief but I used to be a fire captain. You look familiar too" I say back. There was a moment of silence that followed.

"Didn't we get saved from that fire Mikey?" Ezra said to Michael. "Yeah, we did ages ago, like 5 years ago" Michael answers while furrowing his eyebrows in my direction.

"Was it a house fire? Did you both go to hospital? You went to go live with your aunt right?" I asked both as they started to nod.

"Let me just call my station" I say as I walk away.

"So, we saved them? It was us that saved Ezra and Michael? I thought I recognised them. I think I went and visited both of them a few times in hospital, that's crazy" I said to Andy on the phone.

"Yeah it turns out it was my team who saved you guys and I visited both of you a few times actually. I also took your aunts phone number, I'm sorry for your loss" I said as Michael made his way towards me and hugged me.

CARINA POV

Maya left David's house, I had the car so I picked her up and dropped Blake off. As soon as she entered the car, she had the biggest grin and kissed me. This is strange.

"I'm happy you're happy, but why are you this happy?" I asked her

"David and Brian have just started fostering two brothers that we have met before" Maya replied with a giddy smile, confusing me even more.

"What do you mean we've met them before?" I ask. It feels like this is 20 questions.

"Do you remember when we first started dating, and I took you to see two brothers in hospital that I had saved from a fire?" Maya asks and I nodded.

"That was them, they are fostering Ezra and Michael" Maya said, and as she finished her sentence, I started to smile too.

"What are the chances of that. Michael still remembered me but Ezra had no clue. It turns out their aunt died three months ago, I always wondered what happened to them" Maya said after a few seconds of silence.

"I thought you got the aunts number; it is crazy though." I say to Maya. "Yeah it's pretty crazy. I did get her number but she never replied so I gave up all hopes of seeing them. But Ezra is now 10 and Michael is pretty much the same age as Alex" Maya replies, "Maybe we could introduce them", we smile before driving back home.
