The streets of Stars Hallow are quiet, not anything out of the norm in the sleepy little town tucked away in a mountainous area. The difference today however is that a Duel Academy just outside of the town had finished construction a mere month ago, and there were exams being held for new students, the first group of students to grace the halls of the Starlight Academy. There were advertisements set up for this academy almost a year ago, and people tried to apply to it as early as possible given the staff would be made of elite duelists who have made names for themselves in the professional scene. Students will be introduced to the world of professional dueling, as well as given a course that will allow them to either pursue a life outside of Duel Monsters, or even strive for a position in making cards or technology. For the occasion of the grand opening, a truck had delivered all the newest packs for entrants to get their hands on, first come, first served. Most vehicles in the town were dropping off possible students. Future alumni, slackers, possibly even dueling legends were on their way to the newly constructed academy.
On the drive towards the large collection of buildings, individuals would be greeted with a sign welcoming them into the Starlight Academy. Parents were dropping off their children before heading off to work, and in some cases some adults would apply for staff positions in hopes of still available openings. While many an entrant would scurry to get their hands on packs, structure decks, and tins in order to power up their deck, one young man remained firm in just watching. He wore red sneakers with black outsoles, white tongues, and golden laces, a pair of pitch black jeans with white diamond-shaped pads on the knees, a long red jacket with black patches shaped like clubs on his shoulder, and a pair of reflective sunglasses that hide his strikingly orange eyes. His short silver hair is parted towards the left side, the tips tinted with yellow. He was the only entrant who had his own duel disk, and thus wouldn't require one to be assigned to him. This is because he is took prep courses months in advance for this day. His name is Lawrence Carson, and he feels himself the only one who is actually ready for the upcoming exam.
Of course, not all duelists think their decks are going to stand a chance in their current level, as is obvious by them desperately trying to get whatever they can. Two such duelists had managed to buy up two tins and eight packs between them, which they were sharing. One of these two was a small young lady wearing pink velcro shoes, a pair of light blue bell bottom pants that have actual bells attached to her brown leather belt, a hot pink tank top that shows off a character from a game called "Illusion Runner", and a pair of purple glasses with the top of the frame being open, covering her pastel pink eyes. Her messy asymmetrical hair being light pink and lime green with numerous freckles all over her face and shoulders. The other student she speaks to is her best friend Callie Eldridge. Callie came in wearing orange and blue gym shorts, and a matching basketball jersey with her last name, the number 41, and her old team name, the "Crashers". She stands maybe a foot and a half taller than Yuna, and her blonde hair cut similarly to a bob cut. Callie and Yuna are sitting at a table and having a small pow-wow to figure out how to build their decks for this upcoming exam. Yuna is doing most of the deckbuilding, and explaining to Callie how the cards work, as Callie is basically a newcomer to the game who is only trying to enter the academy because her older sister is going to be a teacher.
"Gah. How do you remember all this stuff, Yuna? How does anyone keep all this stuff tracked?" Callie questions, both curious and worried about the fact she is going to probably totally flop this whole exam. She made it through the written exam out of sheer luck.
"Huh? Are you sweating, Cal?" Yuna's question was mostly out of shock. "Never thought I'd see the day. Someone who absolutely crushes the competition in just about every sport, worrying about a game of Duel Monsters."
"It's not just the game, Yun. It's my sister." As Callie mentions this little fact, Yuna pipes down, allowing her to speak her peace. "If I don't get in, I don't know how else I can get a hold of her. We haven't spoken in three years now."
"Cal..." Yuna sympathetically looks at her friend, then back down at the cards to think of what to do. A voice then calls from the side
"Sounds to me like there's a reason she wouldn't want to." The voice came from Lawrence. He steps over and glares as he talks. "Don't know how you managed to get in the building if you're this bad at the game. But whatever hope you're looking for isn't going to be in a pile of cards you bought today. Only way anyone's getting in from here is if they pass the duel exam. And if you're not able to keep track of what your cards do, you're better off not wasting anyone's time."
"Hey! What's it to you, ya big jerk!" Callie immediately flies into a rage, clenching her fist as for a moment her green eyes flash with fire. Yuna trying to calm her down to the best of her abilities, but mostly being silenced by the angered yelling of Callie, and the insults of Lawrence.
"What's it to me is the fact you came to a warzone expecting a tea party. If you fail in every single regard in this duel, you're gonna be laughed out of town. Maybe you should go back to what you know, sports girl." With that last bit of verbal thrashing, a light turns on. This signifies that it's time for duelists to take numbers, and be set up for their exam matches. Yuna collects the deck she and Callie had built up before the two hurry through the double doors to the exam arena. Once numbers are given out, Yuna ends up having the biggest number between her, Callie, and Lawrence. There aren't many seats available, so Lawrence decides to stand as he watches his competition, while Callie and Yuna find a spot to take next to a boy with white hair who remains totally silent.

Not all entrants are lucky to have a vehicle however. As one young man is rushing to get there in time. This man has a black tank top with white ends, and a white X along the back. He also has a pair of dark green cargo pants, all of his pockets carrying different decks. His long purple hair tied back into a ponytail, with a blue strip along one end. His work boots were tied hastily, and the yellow laces look ready to come undone from the sheer movement at which he runs.
"Just my luck. Alarm doesn't turn on, car doesn't start, and the uber would take three hours just to get to me! Must've done some shitty things in a past life, because today's not my day in the slightest!" The young boy yells out as his blue eyes gleam with determination, nothing is going to get in his way or stop him, not even oncoming traffic.
Four souls, four stars are going to make their impact on the Starlight Academy on this day, each one for a different reason than one another. Each of these four stars are going to embody everything the academy stands for, and carving their own paths in the process.
Stay tuned for Chapter 2: Callie's First?! The Brutal Examiner of Spells!
(A/N. sorry if the grammar is bad or anything like that. I am mostly just using this as a writing exercise while also just kinda having fun. I am trying to go for a more anime feel with the characters, there will be growth in the characters, more characters being gradually introduced, and whatnot, but there will be a lot of duels.)
