Locked In

I am volunteering at the library for school, along with Luke. I don't want to call him an enemy, but I can't stand him. I swear he used to annoy me on purpose. I've known him for my whole life. He's a friend of one of my friends. When we were little he picked on me, big time. I felt awful when I was around him. Then he started ignoring me, and when he's tried talking to me since I've blocked him out. Because I know I don't deserve to be picked on.

I stack books as the librarian, Ms. Jane, and Luke walk up to me. She's the sweetest woman, she has a bad memory so sometimes you have to repeat yourself. Or she repeats the same story, but she's so easy and fun to talk to. She has a great sense of humor. Everyone loves her.

"Julie, do you mind helping Luke downstairs? I need you to sort through the books and papers."

As much as I want to groan and ask why I have to do it with him. I nod and follow her downstairs. She points out the piles of stuff on the tables.

"I know it looks like a lot, but if you guys work together it should be nothing. It's mainly sorted out, just scattered." She says as gives me a small smile. She waves me over to the other end of the room.

"Take your shot. He's cute." She says with a smirk.

I hesitate, "No, we're not- I'm not-" Ms. Jane cuts me off.

"That's what they all say." She chuckles as she walks away.

I huff as I walk back to where I need to be. Luke looks up at me suspiciously, I ignore it and start sorting the dusty books.

"Private conversations with the librarian?" He asks curiously. I couldn't help but laugh.

"She's a nice lady. Who wouldn't want to talk to her?" He doesn't answer and just hums as he sorts.

I continue to sort through them. Starting to set them up in boxes.

"So... how's Nick?" I cringe as his question. Nick cheated on me with my ex best friend, Carrie.

"Not sure." I say honestly as I continue to pack the box.

"How do you not know?" He asks with an edge in his voice raising an eyebrow. I roll my eyes.

"Can we please finish this without talking?" I mutter with slight anger.

He puts his hands up in defense, "Jeez, didn't realize it was a touchy subject." He didn't say anything else until it was done.

He stood up with a yawn, I looked out the window. It's snowing, a lot. I look back to Luke who is starting to pick the boxes up and put them on the table. His arms and forearms covered in muscle, I never really thought of Luke in that way. But Ms. Jane is right. He is cute. I'm brought out of my thoughts when I hear my name.

"Jules. Hellooo...?" I blink a few times before finding myself staring at him. "Creeper." He says with a smirk. I roll my eyes.

"I spaced out, don't flatter yourself Patterson. I'm just tired." He raises an eyebrow.

"Mmhm, right." He says as he drags out the 'i'. The lights flicker and turn off. I look up at them, he does too. Then looks down at me.

"Well, let's get out of here."

I take a deep breath and head upstairs. I see all the lights off. I turn them on, but they don't work.

"Ms. Jane?" I yell out. "Are you here?" I yell again. I hear nothing. I look around then walk up to the door, it's locked, from the outside. I groan, great.

"What's your issue?" I point to the door,

"It's locked. She must of left when the storm got bad."

He tries to open the door. I laugh, "Sure he-man. Good luck." He glares at me. Then pulls out his phone.
