As I followed Richard out the door, a middle-aged blonde lady entered. She was smartly dressed in a maids uniform, her blonde hair slicked neatly back into a low bun.
"Morning, Jane." Richard grunted as we bumped into the petite woman in the doorway.
"You done for the night, Richard?" She spoke as she rubbed her tired blue eyes, before breaking out into a yawn.
"Yeah. We're going home."
"Oh, this is Willow by the way. She's new." He adds, slightly nudging my shoulder as he introduces me.
"Nice to meet you, Willow. I'm Jane, the head housekeeper. I'll be here when you guys finish to take over." The blonde lady says with a kind smile, taking my hand in hers to shake it.
"It's nice to meet you too!" I smile back graciously.
"So, how was your first shift? I know it can get a little boring here at night."
"It was okay. Tiring." I say with a weak chuckle. "I had Richard here to keep me company though." I add, gazing up at him with a smirk while nudging his arm in return. Richard faces me, smirking back with the corner of his mouth.
"Hmm I see." Jane says, eyeing the both of us down with a smile, squinting as her eyes bounce back and forth between Richard and I.
"Well, I'll let you two get going. See you both next week." She announces before shuffling away with another yawn.
I feel Richard's hand on my upper back as he guides me out the doorway, walking together to the parking lot. The sun has just started to rise, a stunning mixture of yellow and orange now filled the sky, with the light of the sun coloring the clouds above with a pinkish hue.
I was too occupied looking up at the sunrise to even notice we'd reached Richard's car - a yellow gold Cadillac Fleetwood parked on the curb. Richard opened up the passenger door, tilting his head slightly as an indication for me to hop in.
"Such a gentleman." I tease as I jump in the car. He just scoffs at me, before closing my door shut.
As I wait for him to walk around the vehicle to get in, I notice crushed soda cans and cassette tapes strewn all over the floor, along with empty Marlboro cartons shoved in the centre console. Jesus Christ, he's fucking messy. If this is the state of his car, I don't even want to imagine what his bedroom looks like.
Richard climbs into the driver's seat with a groan. He began to look me up and down with his eyes, as if he's examining my body. I grow embarrassed, awkwardly looking out of my window, pulling on my seatbelt and wrapping over my chest, securing it with a click. He places the key in the ignition as I lay my hands down bedside my legs, feeling the vibrations of the engine growling under my fingers.
"Shit, sorry about the mess." Richard uttered, checking his side mirror before pulling away from the curb. He leant back in his seat casually, using the palm of his hand to turn the wheel.
"Nah, don't worry about it. I didn't even notice." I lied.
"I live at 13 La Luz, it's not far from here.""Got it." Richard nods as we pass through the El Paso neighbourhood. We drive quickly through a block-long slash of concrete, hedged in parked cars and chain-link fences.
Richard taps his finger rapidly upon the steering wheel before looking over at me. "Uhh, how bout' we drive for a little longer. Listen to some music?"
"Sure. Sounds good." I say, breaking my gaze from the road to peer over at him with a smile. I was unbelievably tired, but yet, I didn't want to go home just yet, and clearly neither did he.
