When Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan woke up, the cave was cooler. They dressed warmly, threw wood on the fire and pulled down enough pine tree branches from the cave door to get the horses out. The snow had started melting in the bright sun. Shadows were sharp and the air was crisp. Sparkles flew upward when the wind blew dry snow into the air like fairy dust.
The horses relieved themselves and started eating grass that was under the snow by clearing it with their noses and hooves.. Wei decided to let them graze and bring them in later. He put the pine branches back over the cave opening and took a handful of needles to the fire. There he made tea with them.
After breakfast Wei and Yunlan carried more firewood into the cave from a pile outside and created a roaring fire to Yunlan's delight. He loved looking into it while Wei made porridge and scrambled eggs again.
We added sourgrass and wild garlic he'd picked on the way to the eggs and put a teaspoon of honey on the porridge. The honey was precious and only a small jar was given to Yunlan.

The horses were still eating when they checked. The snow had melted in the small clearing near the pond. Yunlan took a horse and rode to the start of the downhill climb. He came back and said, "There is too much snow to go down now. It will probably melt if the sun keeps warming the air. Let's stay here another night. Want to walk around the mountain clearing today?"
"Yes, Kunlun. Let us do that." Wei dressed warmly and tightened the fur around Yunlan's shoulders. He shut it together firmly over his neck. "Let us go, my love."
Zhao kissed him on the forehead when he adjusted the fur. Wei blushed and turned away. Zhao Yunlan took him by the shoulders and kissed the back of his neck, which was now a brighter shade of red.
