"The rearguard? Seriously?" Connie questioned as soon as Mikasa and Corinne returned back to the other cadets. "Yeah, but it's good for me in a way. I can get my mom as fast as I can out of the city before Titans can compromise any more of it."
"Do you know where she is?" Bertholdt asked, Corinne thinking it over. "Just before I left for the wall, I saw my mother in that parade of people when the Scouts Regiment left. She wanted to see my father off before he left. After that, I'm not sure. But I'll find her, wherever she is."
"It's really brave of you to want to protect your mom, Corinne." Christa complimented, Corinne looking away in embarrassment, her cheeks slightly pink. "Um..I just..really worry about my family, that's it."
"Alright, cadets! In position at once!" A Garrison soldier came calling, everyone suddenly scurrying to get into their squads and take off. Corinne exhaled sharply, following just behind Mikasa as they zipped out of the headquarters and made their way towards the second gate of Wall Rose. That was where the Garrison was already establishing their evacuation procedures.
"Any sign of her yet?" Mikasa asked Corinne as they both landed on a rooftop near the gate, Corinne scanning her eyes through the crowds of people. Corinne continued until she groaned, shaking her head. "No. She has to be here somewhere. She normally senses when something's happened."
"We'll find her, don't worry." Mikasa assures, placing her hand lightly on Corinne's tensed shoulder. But Corinne couldn't relax, not until she saw her mother. Not until she knew she was safe.
Evacuations were going somewhat smoothly, with the occasionally hassle from people trying to get out the city. But that all came crashing down when a signal flare was shot into the sky, the green smoke fluttering vibrantly into the slightly dark clouds.
"Someone needs help.." Mikasa stated, Corinne nodding in agreement. She took one last look below at the crowd of people, her heart pounding so hard against her chest, she could hear it in her ears. Where was her mother? Did she caught up in the mix of a Titan attack? Is that what that flare could be?
"Let's go check it out. It may be civilians trying to get out of that area." Corinne stated while taking off down the street, Mikasa following just behind, the two teens speeding down a couple blocks and coming closer to where the signal was shot from.
"Hey! I could use a hand with these things!" A voice rang out just as they were thrown to the ground, hitting it with a loud thud. It was Reiner, and he just got knocked out of the air by an Abnormal Titan. "Reiner! Mikasa, take that Titan! I got this one over here!"
With a swift motion, Mikasa flew past Corinne and she took a clean cut to the Abnormal's nape, swiftly slashing deep and landing on a rooftop nearby soon after. Corinne came up on the other Titan, her blade slashing into it's arm just as it reached to grab her and she swung up, cutting deep into it's eye sockets. The Titan, with it's free arm, reached up to grab it's eyes, but Corinne swung around it, swinging her arms back and slicing through it's nape, pushing it's body forward with her feet before landing on the rooftop above.
The Titan crashed down onto the ground and Corinne watched with disgust as the Titan's carcass began to dissolve.
"Reiner! You okay?!" Corinne called, looking further up from the Titan and saw Reiner holding his shoulder, throwing a thumb up. "I'm alright! Nice work."
"Thanks! Just be careful next time! We all need to survive this!" Corinne called back just as Mikasa came up next to her. "Reiner? Have you or anyone else seen any civilians up this way?"
"No. Not from what I know. We've just bee encountering Titans and I got separated from Annie and Bertholdt, so I'm not sure if they found anyone yet!" Reiner replied back, Corinne inhaling deeply. While it's good news that they haven't found her mother dead, it still doesn't help. Corinne looked to Mikasa, her friend already reading her expression.
"We'll find her, Corinne. We just need to keep looking." Mikasa tried to assure, but Corinne couldn't help but have this gut feeling that something was wrong.
"Guys!" They both heard, both turning their heads to the side and seeing Marco land a couple yards from them. "Something's happening! There's Titans heading towards the second gate!"
"They're still doing evacuations there. We need to hurry and get back." Mikasa stated, taking the words straight from Corinne's mouth and the two began to take off. "Marco, could you check on Reiner and see if he's injured?"
"I got it. Do what you got to do." Marco reassured with a pat to Corinne's arm. Corinne acknowledged this and took off after Mikasa, the crowd of people screaming becoming eerily clear to them as they left the area and headed back towards the gate. A Titan can bomb rushing down the street when Mikasa and Corinne came up on the same street being used for evacuation. It was an Abnormal Titan and it was heading straight for the group of people.
"Mikasa! We have to take this thing down now!" Corinne panicked, preparing her blades to attack. "I'm right behind you! Go!"
Corinne came up behind the Titan's legs, slashing through it's left leg and reeling back, coming back on it's right leg, slicing both legs clean from it's body before she swung up to the roof above.
"Mikasa! Now's your chance!" Corinne called out in which Mikasa attached her anchors to the Titan's nape and with a swift slash, cut into it's nape. The Titan fell just in front of the people to where they backed away, afraid that the Titan would get back to it's feet and eat them.
Corinne joined Mikasa down below, coming up next to her friend and looked between her face and the rest of her body.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine, thanks." Mikasa simply said with an assuring nod. Corinne sighed, looking from her to the Titan under her.
"Corinne?" The two heard, both of the girls' heads turned back to the crowd and just in front of them stood a woman. The very woman that Corinne had been searching for.
