Chapter 17: The Fatal Mistake

As Emma wrote the letter to Harry, she began to think back to the last time she saw Harry at school. It hadn’t been a pleasant encounter…

It was the night Dumbledore had died. After Dumbledore had been killed, She had grabbed Draco and dragged him from the Astronomy Tower upon her father’s orders. They were outside now, on the school grounds, about to reach the boundary where they could Dissapparate, when Harry caught up with them.

Harry took aim at Snape and yelled, “Stupefy!”

He missed, the red light soaring past Snape’s head. Emma aimed her wand at him defensively.

“Run!” Snape yelled to the other Death Eaters. He turned to Emma who had a death grip on Draco's arm.

“Are you staying?” he asked Emma. She nodded.

“Draco, go,” Snape ordered.

Draco looked at Emma and shook his head, “I'm not leaving you.”

“You're in no condition to fight,” she said, releasing her grasp from his arm. She nudged him towards the gate.

“Go,” she said. “I will meet you at the Manor. I will be fine.”

Snape and Emma both had their wands pointed at Harry. Emma didn’t want to hurt him, and yet at the same time she wanted to show her loyalty to her father and the other Death Eaters. Harry had raised his wand as well, and Emma got ready to battle.

“Cruc—” Harry yelled. Snape parried the curse, knocking Harry off his feet. Harry rolled over to see the huge Death Eater behind him yell, “Incendio!”, setting Hagrid’s house alight with an explosive bang. Emma had to move to avoid the flames. She moved forward, closer to Harry.

“Fangs in there, yer evil—“ Hagrid bellowed.

“Cruc—” Harry yelled a second time, aiming for Snape once again. Snape blocked it a second time. Emma could see that he was sneering.

“No Unforgiveable Curses from you, Potter!” Snape shouted over the crackling of the burning hut, Hagrid’s yells, and Fang’s yelping. “You haven’t got the nerve or the ability. Show him how it’s done, Emma,” Snape said. Emma raised her wand, feeling reluctance and even fear, and pointed it at Harry. She could not let her father down.

The pain started without warning. Harry writhed for a moment. Emma had mastered silent spells. She released her gaze and lowered her wand, and the pain stopped.

“Incarc—“ Harry roared, but Snape deflected the spell with an almost lazy flick of his arm.

“Fight back! Fight back you cowardly—“

Emma was glared at Harry again, thinking hard, ‘Cruciatus!’ When Emma released him from the curse, Harry lay on the ground, his eyes closed.

“You dare to call my father a coward, Potter?” Emma asked. Harry forced his eyes open and saw Emma’s face. She didn’t look afraid as she had up on the tower. Being next to her father empowered her. She sneered down at Harry.

“Cruc—” Harry yelled.

“Hasn’t my father just said no Unforgiveable Curses from you, Potter?” Emma asked, blocking the curse as easily as Snape had.

            “Cruc—” Harry tried again.

Emma made it so pain engulfed Harry once more. She had been learning new things from her father. She could do spells without speaking them and was able to stop spells with just a flick of her wand along with having mastered Occlumency.
