The sky was dark. The rain droplets were dropping on the car windscreen fast, sounding a little rhythm. Thunder flashed and lightning howled. The car seemed completely lost in the storm. There was no one else.

"Charlotte, is this the right way?" Matthias asked the girl sitting next to him. "I'm kind of lost."

He looked towards her and realised that she was sleeping. He gently patted her on the cheek, and her eyes opened. She smiled and asked, "Yes honey? What is it?"

"Can I have the map please? I'm lost," Matthias grinned sheepishly.

"Sure, just wait a minute." Charlotte fumbled through her bag. It was a luxury Gucci bag that Matthias had bought for her on their first formal meet-up.

"Dear, I've got a problem." Charlotte looked up from her bag, her face plastered with worry and anxiety. "I don't have it, do you? Wait, you didn't bring any bags! Oh! What are we going to do now?"

"It's okay, we can find a way." Matthias hugged her, comforting her, "I'll go and ask around."

The pair got out of the car, staring around at the dark, creepy buildings. Matthias whimpered. Charlotte quivered. The whole place seemed like it was haunted by ghosts. Out of the blue, they heard a loud honk, and saw a black, crippled car speeding towards them, and a fat driver laughing menacingly at the window.

The crash was unavoidable.

Slam! Charlotte was struck by the speeding car. She immediately lost consciousness and fell to the ground with a dull thud. Blood spilled out from a wound in her head, causing the ground to turn a deep crimson colour. The blood oozed and oozed out of her body, like it would never stop. Jayden, the fat car driver, chuckled. "Good riddance!" he yelled triumphantly at her prone body. "You'll learn one day, Matty, that this is all for your own good! You will come and thank me one day, Matthias, I swear you will. And you better!"

Matthias froze, not knowing what to do. He shuddered. Why did he do this? Was it revenge? If it was, for what reason? A single teardrop fell onto his shoe, before a fountain of tears flooded the sidewalk. Matthias knelt down on the pavement, over Charlotte's body. Only after a while could he finally bring himself to call the ambulance.

Everything happened in the blink of an eye. At the hospital, blood was seeping from the gaping wound, soaking the green dressing the nurses had given Charlotte deep red. The doctors and nurses were scurrying from place to place, feeding her liquids and applying cream, fluids, and liquids onto her many wounds. The gash in her side wouldn't stop bleeding, however hard the doctors tried to hold the fluids in. "Matthias, I'm sorry, but we may not be able to save her." The doctor shook his head.

"No...please, doctor. She must live, she just....she just can't die. She just can't..." Matthias broke out into another shower of tears. "All that I love, all that I have lived for! Please!"

Her eyelids fluttered shut, but they never opened. Her heartbeat was unsteady, fading by the second. Matthias sat by her bed, clasping her hands in his. When would she ever open her eyes again?

He whispered to her non stop, "Please wake up, please wake up, please wake up, please wake up..."

"Beep... Beep...... Beep........." The heart rate monitor beeped at longer and longer intervals, until......it slowed to a stop.

The doctor looked up from the heart rate monitor, and solemnly told Matthias, "My apologies, she has gone. I am truly sorry indeed. You may spend your time with her before we bring her away with the report."

"No..." he breathed shakily. It was not possible. It couldn't be possible. All the doctors, with all their technology...

But it had happened, and there was nothing he could do about it.

They couldn't help her.

They couldn't save her.

She was dead. His only love was dead. Forever.

(Or so he thought.)
