Getting out of bed was difficult, as it always is when I sleep in my godparents' home. The air here was no longer pure. At least, at the Park home I'd wake up to the smell of sweet and/or savory concoctions being made by Claire, the smell of Roseanne's perfume and body wash, the scented plugs that were discarded around the house, and sometimes, just sometimes burnt bread. Here though, it was nothing but heavy intoxicating cigarette smoke. No matter how many towels I placed under my door or how much of the wood-scented air freshener I sprayed, it didn't go away.

I couldn't even brush my teeth in peace without my piece of shit god brother trying to break the door down because he really has to piss. It doesn't get any better when I go downstairs. I'm just glad that for the most part, I don't have to talk and no one even talks to me, it's both a bless— what am I kidding, it's a blessing all around.

I grab the yellow book off the counter and make my way to the door ready to make my way over to Rosie's house. Without even looking at the path in front of me, my legs naturally guide me over to the front of her door. I notice a foreign car in the driveway and twisted my face in confusion. That's not Ally's car.

Still, I knocked on the door because my main focus was Rosie so we could walk to school together like we always did since we were younger. We even pledged to keep each other safe in case a criminal tried to snatch our bags or one of us in general. At the end of our little ceremony, we tied it all up with a good ol' pinky promise.

I knocked on the door, the cold surface cooling down the joints that made contact with it. I was greeted by Rosie who had a faint smile on her face. She stood over to the side to invite me in and Clare found me before I made it to the kitchen.

"Oh! Y/n! I thought you weren't coming by this morning... Chaeng said you weren't, is everything ok?" Her words were definitely not mellifluous, she told her mom I wasn't stopping by when I never once even hinted at it, even after I said, 'see you tomorrow?'

"Yeah yeah I'm good." I lied. Just another situation where I couldn't tell her how I felt without sounding depressing, delusional, or a... freak.

I clenched my jaw as Roseanne came walking out of the kitchen with Nicolas by her side, holding a waffle in his left hand, his cheek puffed up from one side as he was still chewing. "Mrs. Park you're the best waffle maker in the whole world and ice cream for breakfast? My mom would freak!"

"Y/n I gave him your waffle since you know... I can make you one though real quick."

"No! No, it's fine I already ate. Thank you though."

"Hey, y/n have you had her waffles? I tried some of Rosie's chocolate waffles and it was great so I had to have my own." Ice cream waffles are our thing.

Rosie?

Rosie doesn't like chocolate.

I tightened the grip on my book and bit my lip trying to suppress any caustic remarks and possibly anger-filled yelling at the boy Roseanne was holding so tightly. "Oh, I just remembered I have tutoring I really need to go now." I lied again which I rarely do to Clare. Still, she nodded and sent me off with a hug.

I was sitting in the school meet-up area where the school mascot's face was imprinted largely on the floor and there were 3, stair-like levels with lots of space to sit and hang out before, during, and after school. It was part of the school's newly added building back in 2016 and I'm just glad I was here for the after.

A tall figure sat next to me, more like let herself fall as she breathed in and out deeply; her chest moving in a brusque manner.

"Fuck, I was looking for you everywhere. Your friend said you didn't make it to the library so I thought you probably didn't even come." Lisa said, leaning lazily against me with eyes closed as she tried to recover. I patted her head and fixed her disheveled bangs feeling bad yet, finding it cute that she was willing to run for me but not for gym class.
