"This is probably a bad idea. And by bad I don't mean terrible, I mean the dumbest I've ever heard of."
Susan huffs. "I think so, too," she agrees, "but try telling Peter that..."
Birdie focuses her gaze on the pair leading their little group. Lucy is the first, of course, with Peter trailing not so far behind. Every few steps, the youngest Pevensie turns to look at her eldest brother, an inviting smile on her face as she encourages him to hurry.
Birdie and Susan are walking shoulder to shoulder, both rather sceptical. The two girls bond a little over their shared anxiety evoked by the fact that they've found themselves in a cold, unknown environment. It seems natural to feel anxious in a situation like this one, but it's also easy to doubt oneself in the face of others (mainly Lucy and Peter), who act as though there was not a speck of worry on their minds.
Birdie has to admit, she kind of envies them. The two siblings appear rather happy exploring the woods, but she cannot shake the feeling of uneasiness. It's cold, and each way she looks, she sees the same landscape - it can't be hard to get lost in this place, which only adds to her distress. She would hate to die of freezing inside a wardrobe.
Besides there's a strange feeling she can't shake off. An intense gaze that makes all the little hair on the back of her neck rise, as though the trees followed their every move.
"...but, of course, he's going to be stubborn now," Susan keeps mumbling under her breath as they struggle to walk through the snow without losing every last bit of dignity. "Sometimes I can't help but think that I am the only sensible one out of the four of us. It's unnerving, honestly. We're not dressed appropriately, we have no idea where we are..."
Damn right, she is. There's a lot of truth to Susan's words that cannot be denied. Aside from the fact that they've entered into a magical land hidden inside a wardrobe (which, by the way, is a circumstance impossible to ignore), they are currently walking farther and farther away from the known road back home. Birdie doesn't want to undermine Lucy's abilities to navigate, since she's the one who has the best right to claim that she knows the way. Still, it's only her third time in Narnia... Mistakes could happen, that's for sure. As well as many other things impossible to predict, mostly horrible and ending up with all of them dead.
All in all, Birdie has no idea why she decided to follow the siblings into the woods. Turning back and going through the wardrobe once again only to close the door for ever must have been the best option. They could just forget any of this ever happened and go back to living their lives - Birdie suspects she would have had no problem with that at all, happy to return to the known walls of the Professor's house.
However, she might also be a little curious. With her thoughts drifting back to the man who's shown her nothing but support and kindness her whole life, Birdie cannot help feeling that, if she were to leave Narnia without taking the chance to explore it, she would be disappointing him in some way. If the Professor knew of her current predicament, he would certainly acknowledge her fear... but he would also tell her to see it all as an adventure.
Like the ones she used to dream of as a little girl.
Just as they stop to catch their breaths, Peter approaches them. The front of his trousers, along with parts of his fur, is white with snow from the fall he's had a couple of minutes ago, trying to descend a hill in a rather sloppy manner. "You alright?" he asks, unable to hide his excitement. "You two seem awfully quiet."
As she allows her gaze to settle on the boy's face, Birdie notices that their eyes have a certain glint to it. She's never really took time to think whether there's much resemblance between the siblings in terms of appearance, but she sees it now - it's the same look that adorns Lucy's face.
